Nathan Buckley

Postby hearts on fire » Tue Apr 14, 2009 10:36 am

There have been many rumours floating around about him and coaching, heard on the radio that Williams could go to North Melbourne and Nathan Buckley could go to Port, but thats just a rumour and i only heard it on the radio.

What other coaches are under the pump? Terry Wallace, Mark Harvey, Dean Laidley.....

What does everyone think? could we see Nathan Buckley coaching at Port and Williams in Melbourne?

I would be interested to see how the Power went with Buckley as coach.
I would expect an improvement.

No, I reckon Buckley is Malthouse's replacement in waiting, kinda like Voss and Leigh Matthews.

I'd think Laidley has done pretty well with the Roo's and barring a terrible season and knee-jerk reaction, I think he should be there next year.

Wallace is in his last year I reckon and can't be saved and it would be a brave person to back Harvey to be at Freo again next season.

i don't think Buckley would be a good coach. Buckley was a top player but he left Brisbane and never won a flag with Collingwood. There is something about Buckley to me that makes me feel he wouldn't be a good coach. If bucks was to coach look elsewhere like West Sydney

I don't think relating a players performance to his coaching and communication ability is the way to go.

Listening to him on television and radio as a special comments man, the bloke seriously knows his footy as you would expect, and communicated that knowledge well.

I'd back him to make a good coach, and as the professional and perfectionist that he is, he wouldn't be the type to ever rest on his laurels.

TBH, I'd be surprised if Scotty Burns wasn't similar.

Mick's had 10 years at Collingwood so I wonder if he might even pull the pin before the club does it (at the end of the year - assuming no premiership again). After 25 years of senior coaching, Mick must be thinking about doing something different. Or at least something less stressful!

Buckley seems like their next coach in waiting. With so many potential vacant coaching positions next year, Collingwood might be forced into signing their man Bucks before somebody else does.

I wonder if they would keep Mick on in some sort of mentoring role with Bucks (or whoever it is)?

Look for Malthouse to be reapponinted on a 1 year deal with Buckley as assistant..
Eddie would not allow his "BUDDY" to coach anywhere else....

Buckley has said he wants to coach next year at senior level.

Wont take that role and neither would Malthouse knowing he is just grooming Buckley for his spot.

I hope he doesn't coach. I am rather impressed with his work in the commentary box. He has somehow managed to overcome the destabilising effect of being born without a personality to provide insightful analysis every game.

You wonder whether Collingwood would push Malthouse to appoint Buckley if another club offered him the top job. Colingwood obviously wants him as their next and you'd expect he'd prefer to coach Collingwood.

Wallace will see out the year and not be re-appointed for next year IMHO. Regardless of whether he could or should have done better he will be made to blame. Tambling could be a bargain buy at the end of the year as well. He obviously has a lot of talent but can't put it to use. A change of environment and he could be a very useful player, in a similar vein to Travis Johnstone.

Bailey should get longer and without any obvious bloke to put in who would want to coach there he deserves a bit longer.

Laidley is safe IMHO. Yet to have a bad season and plenty of good ones given what they have is a brilliant achievemment. If anything he'd go elsewhere by his choosing but I can't see that happening. Seems to be in for the long haul.

Harvey will not see the season out. When he took over Fremantle were a tough side at home with a lot of talent but not able to win interstate enough. Now they are terrible, and their established players are going backwards! Pavlich the only guy who looks like being dangerous, but how long will he stay in that environment?

If I were running the Richmond Football Club, I would be expressing serious interest in Buckley.

I have no doubt in my mind Buckley will be a top coach. I don't think I've seen a player so meticulous in his approach, and I have a feeling he would approach coaching in the same manner.

Whereas "Coaches" such as Wallace has been distracted by other things such as media involvement, etc, Buckley would leave no stone unturned to be as good a coach as he can possibly be.

I'm with Strawb, I don't think he will make a good coach. Knows his stuff, yes, but I don't think he has all that is required to be a good senior coach. At least if he coaches, he'll be out of the commentary box. I think James Hird would make an excellent coach.

Buckley, easily. Sheedy's time is past, as shown in his final 3 years at Essendon. He clearly had lost touch with the requirements of coaches in the modern era, and left Essendon with a shocking list.
