are port 'tanking' ?

Talk on the national game

are port 'tanking' ?

Postby bayman » Sat Aug 09, 2008 9:37 pm

for a club that says of their never give in attitude & approach why have they given up or if you like not trying or another tanking ?

why i'll tell you they are doing what other clubs in the past have & the afl allow it by their own stupid draft rules, i think the reward should be the higher you finish

ie finish 9th = first pick
finish 10th = 2nd pick

etc when you get to the 16th team you then start at the 8th team going up to the premiership team

your thoughts please
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

No ..... They've got 5 wins so can't get a priority pick. So what's to tank for? 6th pick instead of 8th? Not worth the cost.

Are they picking the same team as they would if they were fighting for the 8? No

Are they trialling juniors and resting injuries to plan for 2009? Yes

Are they telling the players they do pick to play badly? No

Are the players on the park deliberately trying to lose? No

Has the team lost its confidence? Yes

Bayman in every season some teams do well and some go badly. I don't think there is anything more in it than that.

hondo, it wasn't meant to be change the system because of port having a bad year it was more like should we change the system to stop clubs having a choice to 'blood' a lot of young players as there can be an advantage down the track.....as for port tanking well i'm wrong on that as i thought it was 5 wins or less so i apologise for that error

Bayman I agree in terms of the priority pick which I think should go

Not because teams tank to get it (IMO), but because of the incentive it creates for the clubs and the negative "tanking" speculation by supporters

As David Wildy said on radio, if they tank, then they're stupid. If they finish 14th they will get draft pick 3 and 19 at best and that's not including the picks allocated to the Gold Coast.

I went to a metro footy club today and Port supporters were standing behind me cheering goals from the blues, saying "that's good for the draft picks".

They're daft if they think that's gonna help.

IMO they are poorly coached in regards to to this

are they trialling juniors and resting injuries to plan for 2009? Yes

Why drop Bentley for an under performing Burgoyne?????
Has the team lost its confidence? Yes

Why is that no questions have ever been ansewered by Williams he only makes excuses eg. we have lost 6 under 5 point we have a young team wa wa wa not answering why port are loosing the close ones or why they players from last year are not performing.

Bayman in every season some teams do well and some go badly. I don't think there is anything more in it than that.

Why have they had such a sh*t year after perfomring so well last season???? WHY has never been answered Francou is trying to get an answer eg game plan etc but nothing changes from week to week.

Apart from being shite, they have a coach who is as mad as a cut snake. He carries on like some poor man's Kevin Sheedy. It'll be very interesting next year, apparently the incoming President is not a Williams man at all and is very keen to reduce William's influence "back of house" .

Absolute rubbish. Its not actually possible to overachieve, but a team can perform well above expectations. Port is ordinary this year , but for you to say they weren't good enough to make finals in 07 says more about you than what it does the PAFC.

Tanking is a crock of shit. The word should be banned.

I got it last year/before that etc about Carlton, and unless there is proof everyone
should STFU or prove they are.

Carlton were just better, end of story....

No tanking IMHO, just club getting (close to) a look at their full list ... They'll be racking up some big "Point-to-prove" credits which the Port footy club have always thrived on.

With a full pre-season under their belts, and being mindful of their woeful start this year which effectively killed their season, Port will play finals footy in 2009.

What is the incentive to win games at the moment?? They say the first three kids in this years draft are guns and this draft has the best depth for years and i believe its the last one before gold coast and west sydney get their fingers into it before everyone one else. They could also get an uncontracted player/s for bugger all like carlton etc have over the years. They are definately improving the value and trying many youngsters at the moment, some of whom i think they can easily put a tick or cross next to their names. i dont have a problem with what they are doing as i believe once their season was over for finals you start to prepare for the next year by blooding kids and looking at your list.
