Fitzroy are back!

Postby Sojourner » Tue Dec 23, 2008 12:40 pm

From their website!

THE BOYS FROM OLD FITZROY ARE BACK AT BRUNSWICK STREET
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT – IT’S OFFICIAL

On Monday the 8th December, the Fitzroy Football Club entered into a merger agreement with the FITZROY REDS to field a FITZROY senior team in the VAFA competition.

This merger with the Fitzroy Reds in no way affects the merger with the Brisbane Lions at the AFL level.

It will ensure the future of senior football at the Fitzroy football ground which has the wonderful support of the very successful FITZROY JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB.

Fitzroy members and supporters are urged to get behind the Club and support it, which thanks to the FITZROY REDS and the VAFA, is now back home where we started 125 years ago last September.

And as well as, the Fitzroy Football Club are back on the field for 2009 (for the first time since 1996) so will be going to a few of their matches at the Brunswick Street Oval as well.

A Fitzroy - Brisbane Lions double header next season will be great!

We sure are back (on the field that is). However the Fitzroy Football Club itself had never gone out of existance and is about to enter its' 125th year.

At its' Board meeting on 8 December 2008 the Fitzroy Football Club directors unanimously agreed to a merger agreement with Fitzroy Reds Football Club Inc, which means that 12 years after Fitzroy lost their licence to compete in the AFL the Club will be once again fielding teams on a Saturday.

The Club will be officially known as 'Fitzroy Football Club Ltd incorporating Fitzroy Reds'. All assets of the Fitzroy Reds will be transferred to the Fitzroy Football Club Ltd.

The football teams under the management of the Club will be known as “Fitzroy”

The home ground of Fitzroy will again be the Brunswick Street Oval, the home ground of Fitzroy in the VFA and the VFL for 82 years. (1884-1966)

Fitzroy will wear essentially the same jumper, shorts and socks as was worn by Fitzroy in 1996.

The Club theme song will be the same as was sung in 1996.

VFL-AFL: 1897-1996, 8 premierships

I can't remember what the program was called but it played last year on Fox with Hird hosting (History of Australian Football maybe) where they showed a segment on the Fitzroy Football Club living on. It was quite interesting to watch.
