is it time for a lottery draft

Postby Strawb » Sat Aug 16, 2008 5:52 pm

We all know teams will now tank to get draft picks. Is now the time for the AFL to start a fantasy draft or keep it like it is.

This gets discussed very frequently, and obviously the current system is ridiculous but whilst Dumbetriou is still the boss, its likely to stay as it is.

Why talk about this crap ? You think St Kilda didn't drop games 10 years ago in order to secure picks ? You think Collingwood didn't do the same ?

Some teams are shit, and trust me I follow one, but seriously the whole tank/draft thing is crap.

Unless you get pick 1, there are no guarantees with the draft.

Just because a bloke goes at number 2 or 3 doesn't mean he might be a flop.

Being pissweak on field without winning games etc results in loss of sponsorships, members, gate attendances & other streams of revenue.
The monetary value would be the clubs biggest problem, not worrying if they get pick 1 or 2.....

I heard the other day that the AFL has changed the priority pick to be #17 rather than # 1. Given that you have to lose > 17 games in 2 consecutive seasons to get it, I think that's about as much as can be done short of dropping it altogether.

It's the priority pick that created this debate - we never asked the question before then even tho there's been a draft since 1986.

It's common in all sports that teams not in finals contention start planning for the following season by trialling juniors, different tactics, resting injured players who would otherwise play, etc ... but that's NOT tanking.

Besides, if a team deliberately tried to lose you would see huge blow-outs, which we don't unless Geelong play. Geez, who on here who has played the game thinks they could go out and try to lose?

SJABC, I'm with you on this one .... it's us supporters who keep raising the T word

I agree with you Hondo and Jabber, BUT, whilst the "T" word is commonly discussed among the fans it will continue with the current system ... A Different system (ie lottery) might well remove all element of doubt?

CP, yes maybe it would ..... but my concern is it would be done to clamp down on conspiracy theories, rather than fixing a problem that's real. I'd like to see some hard evidence before we start jumping at shadows.

I think the US sports do a lottery on the first 4 picks - that could be an option however in the US there are at least 32 teams so their top 4 is like our top 2 picks.

My tip is that the conspiracy-theory fans would support this new system until their club finishes bottom but ends up with draft pick 16. Then watch the hysterics.

My beef was always the priority pick, not the normal draft. I can't support a system where the premier could walk away with a "Chris Judd" just because they got lucky

OK the Priority Picks really became a more of a formality in 1999.

1999
Josh Fraser to Collingwood
Paul Haselby to Fremantle
Collingwood had pick 3 which they traded to Richmond for Steven McKee.

2000
Nick Riewoldt to St Kilda
Justin Koschitzke was pick 2 (non Priority) to St Kilda

2001
Luke Hodge to Hawthorn
Luke Ball to St Kilda
Chris Judd to West Coast Eagles

2002
No Priority as Carlton stripped due to salary cap breaches.

2003
Adam Cooney Western Bulldogs
Andrew Walker Carlton
Colin Sylvia Melbourne

2004
Brett Deledio Richmond
Jarryd Roughead Hawthorn
Ryan Griffen Western Bulldogs

2005
Marc Murphy Carlton
Dale Thomas Collingwood
Xavier Ellis Hawthorn

2006
* Priority picks changed to second round *
Shaun Hampson Carlton
Leroy Jetta Essendon

2007
Matthew Kreuzer Carlton

Carlton got a first round pick due to not getting more than 16.5 premiership points two years in a row...

Yeah thats the pick they get the first year, but as per the pick to Carlton last year, in the second year, they get the pick in the first round.

So if the priorities start at say 17, then it would look like this i guess, as im pretty sure melb won mor than 5 games last year.

Pick 1: Melb
Pick 2: WCE
Pick 3: Port
Pick 4: Freo

Worth remembering that in 2000, Hawthorn had 12 wins, and West Coast had 7. Both clubs obtained picks 1 & 3 through trading.
