Players on club lists this year from the 90s

Postby spell_check » Tue Aug 26, 2008 11:37 pm

A number of these have retired throughout the season, or have announced that this will be their last year. These players were around when there was Waverley Park, the MCGs newest stand was the Great Southern Stand, Princes Park was used on a weekly basis, the WACA was still used for football, the goal umpires wore the lab coats, there were only "the men in white" and not "the men in orange/green/yellow", almost every player wore black boots, the kick to handball ratio was around 2:1, Spider Everitts tattoo project was in its early stages, Plugger was still kicking the goals, The Duck was at his peak, there weren't any rotating advertising boards, 12 marks by one player in a match was considered to be outstanding, the Docklands and Homebush were being bulit...yes, that was the late 90s:

I reckon the safest bet on the last one of those to retire would be Chad Cornes.

I feel that when this group retires we will see the end of an era.

Glenn Archer commented on how massively the game had changed in his time mainly around the professionalism required from players. The 90s seemed to be see the end of the semi-professional player who trained a few times a week in between a normal job. The 90s had 1 or maybe 2 assistant coaches, no player leadership groups + all the other changes Spelly noted.

Wayne Carey on the Enough Rope said it was the traditional after each game for the team to go out and get smashed and he, as captain, was expected to be the ring-leader. Nowadays a lot of clubs have drinking bans throughout the season.

So, depending on your views on the modern day full-time footballer, it's possible to label the 90s generation as the last of the "traditional" or "old-guard" players.

Due to his position he plays a fair chance that Fev will go until he's at least 32/33 maybe 34 depending on form/fitness...

While the career span is two years less, I made a list in 2000 of players who had played in the 80s. This is to show how the number of players to have played then shrunk as this decade went on:

2000: 46 players
2001: 26
2002: 18 - Paul Salmon and Tony Lockett returned to the list in this year
2003: 7 (Wayne Carey, Marcus Ashcroft, Alastair Lynch, Michael Martyn, Anthony Stevens, Nathan Burke and Robert Harvey were these 7 players)
2004: 4 (Carey, Lynch, Martyn and Harvey)
2005-08: 1
