R.I.P Charlie Sutton

Footscray legend Charlie Sutton, captain and coach of the Bulldogs' only premiership team, in 1954, has died.

Described by the Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers as "the embodiment of the Bulldog spirit", Sutton was a tough back pocket player who came from Spotswood in the club's zone.

He was both captain and coach of the Bulldogs through the 1950s. When he retired as a player in 1956, he came back the following year as non-playing coach.

Saw some footage of the 1954 Grand Final tonight. He was a solid bloke although not that tall. However, he made his young team walk a lot taller that day. That was before Ted Whitten was Mr Football or even EJ.
