Talk on the national game

Assistant Coaches

Postby X Runna » Mon Oct 18, 2010 10:22 am

It appears assistant coaches have been on the merry go round this year. It seems as if some clubs are placing nearly as much importance on their senior assistant coach as their head coach. Is this going to be a change of style all around the AFL?

I can see it now, senior assistant coach doing most of the prep work and the head coach effectively will be planning and match day coach.

Anyhow, the question remains......who will be Matty's assistants this year? I may have missed something, but I would think Tredders would make a great forward line coach, yet amongst the articles I have read I can not remember his name ever being thought of.

My only fear at the moment is that while there have been a lot of asst. coach movements, are Port behind the 8 ball with the quality of asst. available - or is there a smokey or two out there? New blood is definitely needed (I would have got rid of Cripps too), but where is the quality of new blood going to come from & who will we end up with?

I think Tredrea's preference is to be involved in the media (breakfast radio starting soon) for a few years, and not coach, at least in the short term.

There's been some talk that Gary Hocking may take on a more senior role, and Daniel Healy may return to the club in some capacity as well.

On the news on Saturday night Troy Gray announced that Scott Camporeale was coming as Forwards coach, Buddha Hocking would be incharge of the midfield, Jason Cripps the Defence and that Daniel Healy and Matthew Nicks would be doing the development roles.

Then the nect day the licorice allsorts announce Camporeale as their new midfield coach.

At the moment it appears we are 1 short;

Forwards : Cripps
Midfield : Hocking (up from development)
Defence : ?? Mead perhaps

Development : Healy and Nicks

I reckon Meady would be great in that role. Can see a bit of him in both Chaplin & Carlisle, and yet can see him tweaking their games to another level.

Not real sure on Cripps still........I know he retired early from injury, but was he really that 'clever'? Clever enough to able to switch coaching zones if need be?

Hocking.....great idea .

Nicks, quite like the idea there and don't mind what Healy did up to 2008, BUT he has shat on us before, do we want him back? Bit like Sanderson really.......

As mentioned initially, do we need an experienced senior assistant (ex head coach, aka Laidley in 2010 and probably Bomber at Essendon) to help Matty overall, and lighten his workload?

And where was that asked? Was never asked whether he was any good as a player, was asked whether he is clever.
