It appears another addictive stimulant has been substituted for the one he used to use:

Richmond s Ben Cousins has been hospitalised after a reaction to a sleeping tablet, the club says.
A dangerous mixture of caffeine pills, wine and sleeping pills may be to blame for Ben Cousins' ill health.

I'm amazed at how little comment this thread has attracted from our posters.

Is it a case of over the Cousins saga?

Or, is it just not that much of a story?

Or maybe because caffeine, wine and sleeping pills are all legal...

How long before the papers can stop trotting out his "rap sheet" anytime there is a story concerning Cousins?

Everyone including himself knows he has previously had to battle a problem (no easy fight), will a moral obligation toward the person involved ever come into it?

No problem with reporting the news as they have done in this instance and previously, but there has to be a time he is cut some slack on past misdemeanour's IMHO.

Well said. Every network on TV covering this story has started with 'Recovering drug addict Ben Cousins...'. Yeah, we know. Thanks.

He's only done what I would think most AFL players do before and after games. Even Tom Harley said on Sunrise this morning that he took caffeine tablets, and a large percentage of AFL players would use sleeping tablets I would think, especially trying to come down after night games when they may have a 7am recovery session the next morning.

Give the bloke a break.

Was it Spider Everitt who said a few years back that he took 4 caffeine tabs before a game and 4 at half time, some of these caffeine tablets have over 100mg of caffeine each.

Take several Caffeine tabs before footy and at half time, great win by the tigers - celebrate with a few beers and maybe spirits, struggling to sleep add in a couple of stilnox and i suppose anything could happen.

The bloke is the most tested of any athlete on the planet at the moment ( including Lance Armstrong ) so until we hear otherwise maybe people should cut him some slack.

It is nuts that this is allowed - or that drinks like Pepsi Maxx are - this stuff is not much less addictive than cocaine in equivalent doses..
I guess there is a lot of state revenue raised from addiction - caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, gambling..

HIGH profile AFL player manager Ricky Nixon has been rushed to a Melbourne hospital this morning after being found unconscious at his home.
Ambulance Victoria and refused to say how he had been treated, but it is understood sleeping pills may have been involved.

Nixon's work associate Greg Miller said his wife was by his side and that he was "fine".

''I don't know too much about it, except he is fine. I got up to watch the soccer and I already had a message on my phone, so something happened overnight,'' Mr Miller said.

''He's fine, he was at home, and he was taken to hospital.

''His wife Judy is with him."

Ambulance spokeswoman Susannah Wilson said this morning that paramedics had rushed to treat a 47-year-old man from Kew at his home after being called to the house just after midnight.
