Adelaide Oval upgrade gets green light

Postby tigerland09 » Tue May 03, 2011 12:40 am

SACA members have strongly backed the proposed Adelaide Oval redevelopment in an historic outcome that paves the way for football to return to the city.
About 2000 SACA members arrived at the Wayville Showgrounds tonight for one of the defining nights in South Australia's sporting and cultural history.
Following two hours of presentations from cricket officials and questions from members, SACA President Ian McLachlan has announced that 80.37 per cent of voters had backed constitutional changes needed to pass the development.
A 75 per cent absolute majority was needed for the proposals to be carried forward.
Within minutes of the result being confirmed the Property Council of Australia (SA) has rejoiced at the outcome.
Executive director Natahn Paine said: "The Property Council congratulates the South Australian Cricket Association Members for their foresight and community spirit in voting to support the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval.
"This is the outcome that the vast majority of South Australians wanted - it’s a victory for common sense and progress.”

Probably benefits the Power temporarily by putting off their stay of execution for a few more years when they'll lose another excuse but hurt them eventually by taking that excuse away.

Will be good for state but not sure if it will aid the power. Kangaroos v power attracted 16,000 to a far better ground than what adelaide oval ever will be so i think this whole stadium excuse is just a crock. The power has too many fickle supporters and cant see many more attending just because they have moved to AO

Are you including the playing surface in your opinion? After all, who wants to watch footballers slipping over all day.

Reports suggest the AFC and PAFC will be up to $4M per year better off REB.This is due to gate revenue being directed towards the clubs etc etc.The experts on here, I'm sure, will fill you in as to the why/why not,how/how not.

Will this get more people to the Port Adelaide games? Who knows, it might, it might not.It may encourage more "neutrals" or people living North/East/South of the city to attend. Once again, I'm sure the experts on here will explain to you further as to what exactly will happen.

Will it benefit all South Australians? IMO,yes, it will. Lets just hope the design, plans, construction and outcome are worth the money and the wait. But I'm sure the experts on here will explain to you what is going to happen.

Will the suggested riverbank development along the Torrens lift off in a Melbourne Southbank style plaza? I hope so, but I'm sure someone on here will have the exact answer for you.

Did I think it would all go through? Nup, said it plenty of times on here and that was from information I have been able to source through my current position in the company I work for. I'm glad it did though.

For me, might not be so great as Alberton to West Lakes is not as daunting as Alberton to the City, I'll still go to Port Adelaide games, wouldn't matter where we played.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

AAMI Stadium will be finished as a football venue once the AO redevelopment is finished. At this stage it will remain as the training base for the Crows and possibly be redeveloped into a residential area similar to what has happened at Waverley.

Personally I'm really looking forward to watching Adelaide play at the AO. Unlike the naysayers I don't think there will be any problem with transport or parking. It's a central location and Adelaide's public transport system is geared to transport people to the CBD. People from South & Nth will now be able to catch the train direct to the game. East & Hills (me) will no longer have a 1.5 - 2 hr bus journey to and from the football (only got home after midnight Sat, fair dinkum).

Also - I think this project is a real opportunity to develop a ground whilst preserving it's asthetics, instead of having a mish-mash of stands like a 10 year olds lego creation (see SCG & WACA).

This has probably been discussed in 'that other thread' but will the SANFL then have a slice of AO?

Unless there's been a change in direction, Footy Park will only be finished as an AFL football venue was my understanding ... Reduced capacity and amenities, but still suitable for SANFL footy - Has that changed?

Once decent $$ start flowing into SANFL coffers REB, I think the SANFL will hand the licenses over to the Power and Crows who then won't have the burden of providing a dividend to the SANFL clubs (this funding then coming via footy park land generated income), so there's another likely avenue of relief.

You're correct CP - there will still be a football venue there, just not an AFL one as I understand it.

In the article Duncanson believes the can get 70% more attendance and 30% more membership.

He is delusional. Tv rights have changed the playing field somewhat. I would be working my budgets out on the current attendances as a best case scenario.

The SANFL, Adelaide and Port Adelaide Football Clubs will meet with the State Government and SACA on Wednesday to determine the next step in the redevelopment.
SANFL commissioner John Olsen admitted he was "pleasantly" surprised by the result and said it was important the transition from AAMI Stadium to Adelaide Oval happened "expeditiously".
"Whether it's League competition, community football or our two AFL licences this [decision] helps secure the financial viability and sustainability of football in [South Australia] for the next generation or two, that's how important this decision is this evening," Olsen said on Monday night.
"Football, as a group in South Australia, has been united in its support for this development.
"An enormous amount of work has been put into this project to date and there is still an enormous amount of work to be done but this green light from SACA membership now means that we can move forward."
Port Adelaide has been in favour of a move to Adelaide Oval since the idea was first mooted almost 18 months ago.
The move, which is expected to generate an extra $3.5 million a year for both the Power and the Crows, was viewed as a way of helping Port Adelaide eliminate a core debt of over $2 million and re-establish itself as a financially viable and sustainable business.
President Brett Duncanson denied the club's future hinged on the result of Monday night's vote, but said the move to Adelaide Oval would "add to" its financial security.
"We always knew Port Adelaide was secure whether this vote got up or not," Duncanson said.
"To see the [financial] injection both clubs will have, what it allows us to do is close the gap on some of these other clubs around Australia.
"It's very exciting for our supporters and members and is just a great day for football in South Australia and in particular the Port Adelaide Football Club.
"It gives us a lot of confidence going forward and is just a great outcome. To see the vote overwhelming tonight is a testament to the great work that everyone has done to get it to this stage."
Adelaide chief executive Steven Trigg stated from the outset the club would only consider shifting from West Lakes, where it recently invested $25 million in a training and entertainment facility, if it was guaranteed to be "significantly better off".
Last month, Trigg confirmed the figures added up and that the Crows were in favour of playing AFL games at a 55,000-seat Adelaide Oval.
The move has been met with opposition from some supporters, but Trigg was confident the Adelaide faithful was starting to understand the financial implications of the move to the inner-city venue.
"Playing in a vibrant redeveloped precinct in the CBD is not only very appealing, but represents growth for our business in an otherwise shrinking business and I know that our supporters increasingly are understanding that," Trigg said.
"We know the challenges football has and this [development] represents a great opportunity for football and for our club.
"We do know there are some hurdles still to come, but tonight is a wonderful endorsement - a really solid endorsement - by SACA in parallel with football's support for it. It's a great outcome."

Latest info from SANFL is that all stands will go and it will be a Crows training venue only.

i guess the 10,000 port supporters were going to travel to melb to see that game, and i think you have missed the point, they believe the crowds will improve but it is all about the revenue that will be generated by the clubs.

No my point was more having a crack at kangaroos. The point is it doesnt matter how close to ground is to the city it wont attract any more supporters. Your president has stated that he thinks your crowd could increase 70% by moving to AO, i reckon you may only get a minimal increase.
