i think it is a good movie but the one burning question i have, is why ? why did the truck driver do what he did as i've seen the movie at least 15 times & i still can not see where the catalyst happens (if it does) to make him drive as he did etc

any helpers out there ??

classic movie!! :D

i don't think there was any reason for the truck driver to chase the guy in the car, he just picked a random target. but if he didn't, there would be no movie! ;)

Duel was initially made as 'telemovie' only, but was recognised as being good to be release theatrically.

From the IMDB trivia page:

When Carey Loftin, the actor playing the truck driver, asked Spielberg what his motivation was for tormenting the car driver, Spielberg told him, "You're a dirty, rotten, no-good son of a bitch." Loftin replied, "Kid, you hired the right man."

The driver is simply a nut who wipes other drivers off the road as a hobby.

Agree, great film.

Thanks for the clarification there Interceptor. Had wondered the reason myself. Always thought it was because Weaver had burned off the tanker right at the beginning of the film.

My only question is, how did that tanker keep up with that car?

One of those movies that I haven't seen since I was a kid but have always meant to see again.

It's funny that a lot of local directors turn their noses up at TV gigs.

When one of the greats like Spielberg did heaps of TV.

He almost got sacked from his first job and later, during one crisis in confidence, thought he would never make the jump to film...

whenever im overtaking a truck or i get a truck flying behind me and riding my bumper I always think of that movie!!!

One of the best movies made and there isnt a lot of dialogue!!!

I certainly need to get it added to my collection

channel 10 usually put it on, but it comes on around midnight!!!!!!!

That movie freaked me out when I was a kid. I thought Dennis Weaver must've been the most harassed bloke around at the time. Another of his movies really creeped me out:

Had an irrational fear of hippies after that.
