Ah, Leonard Cohen was a singer. You might be thinking of Leonard Nimoy, and he died last year.

You're testing my irony-o-meter without the use of emoticons. ;)

And just to add more to the overlap, Leonard Nimoy did release some albums.

Yes, RIP Bob. Enjoyed tuning in to hear him tee off on callers with gems like "Get off the line, ya wanko!!!". Me and a mate called him up one night impersonating some zonked-out druggies and we entertainingly got the flick pretty fast.

Someone called Bob up asking if he knew the caller's mum, who apparently had worked at 2UE with Bob in years gone by. When asked for her name, the caller said it was Theresa, and Bob still didn't recall her. After a bit more background and chatter Bob asked for her surname, and the caller said it was Green. "Theresa Green? Theresa Green?" Bob said quizzically. "Of course trees are green, Bob, you dickhead!" (or similar insult) and hung up before Bob could dump him. Bob wasn't happy, he'd been had point-blank.

I can recall in the early 90s he played Faith No More's version of "Easy" just before his show closed (midnight, IIRC). I'm not sure why Bob was asked to play it, given who he was and his audience, but he did nonetheless. He clearly had no idea who this (then) modern rock band was because when the track finished he came back on the air, and after a second of stunned silence simply said, 'I don't know if that was "Faith No More" by Easy or "Easy" by Faith No More!!?!".

I must admit, I may have been a part of the "bread & butter sandwiches" scandal on Fatty's show in the early 90's

Long story short, you had to get on air & talk about anything to him really but somehow just blurt out "I love bread & butter sandwiches" mid conversation. He didn't realise what was going on until it was happening a few times a night. He used to get really worked up calling us wakkas, wankers, dickbrains etc. We were only 15-16 at the time.

It was part of our listening in our late teens as well. A few of us took turns calling him up with the bread and butter sandwiches line. He bit every time.

Re: Celebrity Casualties

Postby Booney » Mon Nov 14, 2016 8:57 am

When Junior Boon came along in '96 we were young parents struggling to make ends meet and deal with parenthood. One of us would invariably be up late at night for the final feed before he went down around 11-12pm for the night.

As I was hardly into talk back radio at the time I would often have music playing to see if that would soothe the young bloke off to sleep, didn't work very every time so rolling around the dial I hear this gruff voice call someone a "wanko dickbrain" and I think hey, he's my type of announcer. From then on Bob would talk Junior off to sleep and senior here would laugh, roll the eyes, cringe, laugh again all in the one Bob sentence.

I met him a couple of times, by chance, around the traps and he was always willing to have a chat, talk about the current affairs of the day. One of the few true icons we have in SA TV/Radio circles.

RIP Bob.
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!
