Anyone here read any/many of the Jack Reacher books?

I see Tom Cruise is playing him in the soon to be released film which will be interesting, because I never pictured Reacher to be anything like TC.

Hope he does the role justice.

I'm a massive Reacher fan and the decision to cast Tom Cruise as Reacher is the biggest **** in movies I can think of since they made Grease 2.

The Reacher book that the movie is going to be made of is based on 'One Shot'. I checked out the trailer and there is one scene where Reacher is surrounded by guys and he says to them 'you don't want this'. **** sake I reckon I could kick Cruise's arse. It would take a lot of Hashish and Vodka for my credibility to be suspended to the belief required that Cruise could stare down a beating before smashing all of those blokes.

In nearly every Reacher book I've read there is a physical description of the guy. Six foot five, 50cm chest...a big bloke. Daniel Craig should have gotten this role but I'd be happy if he kept his shirt on for a change.

I reckon the Reacher series could go on to rival the Bond Franchaise but the decision to cast Cruise as Reacher is mystifying. Hopefully they'll get a bigger meaner type of bloke to fill this role in the future. If Cruise can pull it off I dips my lid but the trailer is not enouraging.

Spot on agree with all of this, I don't know who I pictured whilst reading the books but it sure as shit wasn't Tom Cruise .. Someone like Vin Diesel or even Russell Crowe maybe??

This has caused quite a stir.

Got no idea if Tom Cruise is right or wrong for Jack Reacher...

But physical appearance rarely has anything to do with (good) casting.

You cast for the character - not what they look like.

Classic example is Tony Martin as Neddy Smith.

Unless, of course, you're casting Underbelly.

Above all, one must also consider that only a handful of actors can get a blockbuster movie green-lit.

The Cruiser is one of them...

Thank you Captain Obvious. ;)

However, if you read the Reacher books it's not really left to the reader's imagination about what Reacher looks like, it's not just a type there are actual dimensions of the man. Another captain obvious comment is you have to be believable as an actor which in the scene that I saw Cruise was not.

Tony Martin was good as Neddy Smith because he was believable. Not so Cruise in the trailer.
