Reality - or a load of BS?

Postby Booney » Tue Apr 17, 2012 12:21 pm

So here it goes, deep breathe folks.

The Voice
The Block
Australias got Talent
Dancing with the stars
Big Brother
Master Chef
My Kitchen Rules
Celebrity Apprentice
Farmer wants a wife
Please marry my boy
Biggest loser
X Factor

Now, I now the reality TV phenomenon ( pretty much started by Big Brother ) has taken the TV world by storm and will continue to insult our intelligence, the viewing public that is, by throwing series after series of this rubbish down our throats.

All the networks pour millions into these shows with the obvious ratings bonanza that follows but my question is, to you good folk, have we reached saturation point?

I for one sure think so as "sneak preview" after sneak preview fill up almost all of the space in between this rubbish.
Junior Boon and I spoke about the judges comments in almost all shows when they say to a contestant "You have the talent to win this..." The Voice and Australias got talent first acts both were told exactly that.

Despite acknowledging I have been sucked into many of the previous series of these shows enough is enough and I am boycotting all "reality" TV shows from now on.
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!

Most of it is crap. I'm more likely to watch the "talent" shows than any of the others. I'm not regular viewers of those shows, but do watch from time to time.

9 is bringing back BIG BROTHER, given they're the station that brings in so many turkeys it will no doubt flop (hopefully anyway).

Would be good if some of the networks would actually start spending on making decent drama and comedies like they have in years gone by. I won't hold my breath though, these reality shows are relatively cheap to make, and often do well in the ratings.

I'm not a sheep and hate being subjected to marketing shoved down my throat.

Seriously, it makes me laugh people just get off on these shows. They are aimed at a certain market.

They are cheaper to make than a aussie sitcom or drama so its the TV networks having the last laugh!!

Rarely watch TV.

They are cheaper, but I don't think reality programming has an indefinite shelf life. I would expect/hope reality tv is something that will diminish in time.

The shows are aimed at the lowest common denominator. People who can't think for themselves. People who believe these shows aren't scripted.

I used to watch survivor. At least you could see people starving before your eyes.

Here's some reality for ya. Most of this post was typed while taking a dump.

Their not all bad - although Booney only listed the shite ones:
What about
Bondi Rescue
Bondi Vet
Border Watch
Cops
and other ones of this ilk?

I saw an ad for another show, that I'm sure will be in the bad category but I might tune in for a laugh

they actually call the above shows "factual" shows as opposed to reality shows.

Bondi Vet is gay

Border Security is great - I love watching what the Chinese try to bring in and say its not food (which half of it couldn't possibly be - pickled iguana testicles anyone........)
However, if you were to time the actual programme, it is probably only 12 - 13 minutes with the rest taken up with ads and recalls
Apparently, it is one of the most profitable shows on TV. The Govt need to up their rates, or charge the bad people bigger fines - $5,000 for illegal food should stop a few people, but that would ruin my fun.

Watched some of Big Brother when it came out. And some of the second series. By the third series I had realised that my desire to see slappers flashing their boobs could be better served by the internet, and have not watched Big Brother since.

Watched a bit of the Biggest Losers too. Partly because 'er indoors was watching it, but mostly for the sheer schadenfreude of laughing at fatties torturing themselves to the point of tears. Unfortunately the scripted drama set up around the "contest" renders the show mostly unwatchable, once the novelty wears off.

The first episode of Popstars (the Bardot series) was hilarious: one talentless, overweight tart after another storming off the studio in anger after being told she couldn't sing. I imagine it must be very damaging to one's pride to be told by frumps like Jackie O that one has the vocal range of a strangled chook. Unfortunately the series made pretences at being serious after this pilot and the entertainment value dropped accordingly.
