2011 Adelaide Fringe - Previews, Reviews etc

Postby CK » Sat Jan 08, 2011 12:03 pm

The program has been officially released today, and while there are some excellent acts coming in 2011, overall, it looks a little "thin" compared to past years. Some of the same acts that have been coming for years (eg Greg Fleet) and some that, in my experience, are not worth seeing in standup (I made the mistake one year of Peter Helliar. Never, ever, ever again).

Having said that, still some real gold among it. Pondering whether to see Kitty Flanagan, Jeff Green and Gordon Southern, and will certainly see Hannah Gadsby, Peter Berner (both of whom were hilarious last time I saw them) and a few musical acts.

Any tips out there from past years that are worth checking out, and any that need the big "Avoid, avoid" sign?

Good chance also, when the event starts, for posters to put their reviews in this thread.

I've been to a couple of comedy shows at the Governor Hindmarsh the last few years, they're always quite good. All up, i usually go to about 3 shows a year. Will be interesting to see the schedule to see whats planned for this year.

Scardies final ever shows in Adelaide this year - they're disbanding after over 20 years of making me laugh, definitely going to see them!

I wouldn't mind seeing Peter Burner as well...

The missus and I usually go along to the "Best Of Edinburgh" (or something like that) and always have a top night, good food, great place and good laughs.

Sadly no Tom Stade this year though I believe which is a shame. (Mrs P will have to find someone else to autograph her cleavage)

A Metallica Tribute - The Black Album
presented by Cam Blokland

'Cam Blokland, the guy who brought you "A Dream Theater Tribute - Metropolis 2010" and "A Joe Satriani Tribute - Surfing with the Alien" presents "A Metallica Tribute - The Black Album". Metallica's masterpiece self titled album will be performed in its entirety.'

This is the 3rd in a string masterpiece album performances. Cam Blokland has a vision to keep bringing high quality hard rock and heavy metal shows to the Adelaide Fringe. Those who witnessed his 2009 (Satriani) and 2010 (Dream Theater) shows will vouche for the impeccable attention to detail and the accuracy with which the albums/bands were depicted. In 2011, Cam returns with a band of young Adelaide heavy metal monsters to perform the highest selling heavy metal album of all time.

The band includes: Phil Bennett - Lead Guitar (Desert Eagle), Jez Martin - Bass (Undermine/Zappa Plays Zappa/Metropolis 2010 - A Dream Theater Tribute... etc.) and Gareth Briggs (Curtain). Cam Blokland will step into the shoes of Metallica's lead singer/guitarist James Hetfield.

I went to that, three Fringes running, when the Fringe was every two years. What were the chances of getting Adam Hills each of those years (a funny show each time, but I've heard the "Advance Australia Fair" to "Working Class Man" skit too many times). Otherwise, it's a pretty good sampling of the event.

The Fringe is normally my Christmas in February and March, lots of late nights and shows - great atmosphere and some real gold to be found sometimes at very low prices, if you're willing to take a chance on some unknowns :)

Incredibly brilliant comedy show called Gravity Boots. this show is the most hilarious, intelligent and unique comedy I have seen for years. can only compare to a noughties Monty Python. Gravity boots has been snapped up for Edinburgh 2012. They are on at Fringe on Feb 26 and March 5 in the Gluttony tent. Such clever stuff- get along and see the show- funny clever stuff!

Given your glowing review, I went to the fringe site and searched for details, but found nothing. Are you sure that:s the right name/venue/dates etc?

Off to Danny Bhoy next Saturday night, which was supposed to be part of the Fringe, according to him, but seemed to have slipped through a little. Very good live (provided he doesn't do the "lizard on the wall in a WA mining town hotel" story, which I've heard him do countless times now)..

These lads were picked up by a promoter only at the end of last year after he saw their performance at Flinders Uni and he has squeezed them into the Gluttony Tent. Too late to get into the official program but the are definitely performing and they are definitely worth the $7 buckls a ticket to get in !

Oh, I should have mentioned they are performing at 4pm on both dates.
And I should say I am not an agent or promoter or anything. One of the lads is related to my partner and I have seen how much work they have put into this.
