Not what you're used to.

I have been thinking how much I enjoy movies or actors when they are in roles you are not used to seeing them in.

3 that spring to mind for me are....

Jim Carrey - The number 23
Robin Williams - Insomina
Antonio Banderas - Assassins

So anyone else got anyone to add to here??

p.s. sorry if this thread has been done before

Some recent examples...

Jim Carrey - The Truman Show
Tom Cruise - Magnolia, Collateral, Born on the Fourth of July (pretty much any film he's not being a star and flashing his pearly whites)
Tom Hanks - Road to Perdition, Charlie Wilson's War
Heath Ledger - Brokeback Mountain
Bill Murray - Lost in Translation
Julia Roberts - Erin Brockovich
Charlize Theron - Monster

Robin Williams - The Fisher King, one of my favourite movies

and I second the Theron comment re: Monster, very good indeed.

Think most of the examples I was looking to give are already here .. Always thought Mike Myers role in 54 was out of place and pretty well done (although haven't seen the movie for a while).

Hillary Swank's effort in Boys Don't Cry was a huge step up from her previous dramatic performance.

Whilst I didn't enjoy "Meet The Parents" I thought De Niro in a relatively unconventional role for him, was the shining light.

Robin Williams in The Bird Cage. Thought it very unusual that he was cast as the quiet homosexual bloke rather than the outrageous flamboyant one!

BTW I couldn't stand Fisher King - unusual 'coz I love all of Gilliam's other films.

Haven't seen it but that Adrien Brody in the new Predator film would be an example.
On the other hand, Arnie and Sly have tried to do this a few times with mixed results. Twins anyone? *shudder*

Taking a slightly different perspective...

Interiors was quite a departure for Woody Allen as a director.

Billed as his first 'serious' film.

It's not.

It's a pretentious, undergraduate yawnfest.

Love the title for the third film is the series - Little Fockers.

Reakon De Niro probably seems more unconventional than he actually is in these films because they're straight-out comedy.

The actual 'Jack Byrnes' character is really just a riff of his on-screen persona.

Analyze This was the first time he took the urine outta himself.

Maybe Sly Stallone should've had a quiet word to him before signing on for Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot...

Yeah I was going to mention his role in Analyze This, but I haven't seen enough of it to comment on whether it was any good.

Not sure if it fits this bill as he's always been a good dramatic actor, but playing the role of gay Perry in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a typically top notch Kilmer performance.

I list this as one of my most hated movies of all time.. however I respect him for pushing his abilities to the brink.
