Over-use of the hand held camera in movies

Postby Hondo » Mon Jan 04, 2010 10:25 pm

It suited the style of Black Hawk Down was and needed for the "documentary" style of Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield but the technique was IMO completely irritating in 'Public Enemies' I saw over the weekend on DVD (new release about John Dillinger - famous gangster of the depression era).

The jumpy hand held / as though it was filmed as it really happened style seemed very out of place and unnecessary and was the only thing I could really fault the movie on.

Anyone else feel the hand held camera technique is getting over-used these days?

David Stratton's always ranting about hand-held cameras.

Reakon it's neck-and-neck between hand-held shooting and the mockumentary for the part of film most abused by hacks.

Prefer quick cuts to ramp up the energy and pacing of a scene over jerky camera movements any day...
