Actor Edward Woodward has died aged 79, his agent has said.

The Croydon-born actor was most famous for roles in 1973 horror film The Wicker Man and US series The Equalizer.

He was last seen on screen in BBC One soap EastEnders earlier this year.

You guys would probably know him from Breaker Morant

It is timely to quote playwright Noel Coward:

"Edward Woodward - his name sounds like someone farting in the bath."

RIP indeed.

Won a Golden Globe 'Best Actor' for that.

Best known for his TV work - Callan was another big hit - his more memorable film roles include...

The Wicker Man (1973)
Breaker Morant (1980)
Hot Fuzz (2007)

The Equalizer would be in my top 5 for TV theme tunes (along with Dr Who, Space 1999, Miami Vice, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kids cartoon show) written by Stewart Copeland of the Police I believe.

Great show too - I remember Adam Ant as a criminal hunted down by EdwoodWoodwood in one ep.

His Eastenders episodes were on here only in the last couple of months. His character 'Tommy' died in that.

Was married to Michelle Dotrice (Betty in Some Mothers do ave' em') for a long time, they did a play here in the late 70s. Did the rounds on all the TV shows and their appearance on The Norman Gunston Show was shown on the Comedy Channel just a few months ago.

RIP Edward.

I'm not overly familiar with his work, but I did happen to watch The Wicker Man for the first time a few weeks back.

He was fabulous in it. As was Christopher Lee as Lord Summerisle.
