Classic movies that haven't been remade

You know a movie is a true classic when it hasn't been remade.

I realised this when I was watching The Great Escape last night.
I just couldn't imagine what a remade version would look like? I dread to think.
I'm not even sure you could get an ensemble cast that could work as well as the one which features is The Great Escape.
Brad Pitt playing Cooler King Virgil Hilts? Please, no.

Thinking about it, other movies that fit into the classic category that haven't been remade include Gone With The Wind and Casablanca. Not personal favourites of mine but definitely screen icons. I'm guessing Citizen Kane is in that category as well.

Over to you guys....

The Godfather.

For all of these films there's generally been some pretty close rip-off style jobs done.

Sadly most of the classics I like have probably been remade and no doubt badly remade. If these film makers think they're so damned clever then why don't they take an old film that was a flop and make it better, especially when you consider the modern technology they have now, instead of ruining the great ones :?

Watching Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles as I have been recently I reakon the chick who plays the fem-bot would be a shoo-in to play a young Ripley when they remake Alien

That's Summer Glau...if you like her in the Terminator thing then give the film Serenity a try and/or it's tv series Firefly...she's excellent in that and will no doubt confirm your thoughts about an Alien remake.

Re-makes are an upcoming fad unfortunately. It seems movie studios can't seem to come up with enough original material. Movies slated to be re-made or being re-made currently (not all of them!):

- Footloose
- Escape from New York
- Tron
- Flash Gordon
- Higlander
- An American Werewolf in London
- clash of the Titans
- Death Wish
- Halloween
- Red Dawn
- Poltergeist
- Metropolis
- The Dirty Dozen
- The Fly
- short Circuit
- Straw Dogs
- Robocop
- Revenge of the Nerds
- Sunset Boulevard
- The Big Chill
- Taps
- The Blob
- Rocky Horror Picture Show
- The Karate Kid (no!!!!!!!! :D )
- The Warriors
- Valley Girl
- Total Recall
- To Catch a Thief
- The Hitcher

and .... The Great ..... no, it can't be true can it ....??? ....

The Greatest American Hero

It's not really a modern fad Hondo, it's always been Hollywood's way. Chuck a proven winner at people, or one that was a good idea that didn't quite work the first time.

An example, Scarface. The Pacino version was a remake of a 30s movie but instead the main protagonist was an Italian Capone type character. Pacino's version was an update and a reflection of changing American immigration patterns.

The rate of remakes is far higher today than it has been before DW

"Modern fad" may not be the right word but have a look at the list!

that's true, we all remember 'the ten commandments' in the 1950's well that was a remake from earlier either the 20's or 30's.....the 'stage play' was written thousands of years ago   ;)

As I said to DW, I know remakes are not new. Neither are super-hero movies. However, 20 years ago every second movie wasn't a remake or a Marvel Comic adaptation. "The Green Lantern" is one of the latest coming soon to the big screen. Feels like they are starting to scrape the bottom of the barrell.

That's what I meant by "modern fad". Just like disaster movies were a fad in the 70s and science fiction movies were a fad for 10 years from 1976, even both types were also made before and since.

Someone tell my what was so special about "Short Circuit" that it has to be remade?

I hope that the true classics like DW mentioned stay as they were TBH. There is only one "cooler king"!
