Post on there sums it up really:

Re-: SD Totally agree mate, we will be tortured with the usual American tripe. It is obviously cheaper to buy more overseas rubbish than make an AUSTRALIAN quality program. I would even accept an Australian made rubbish program over all the American reality, medical, police, forensic, blah, blah ,blah rubbish.

I thought when they changed things at the beginning of the year that it would either bring the show back to life or be the end of it, in a similar way to what happened when the police station blew up and Jo and Clancy got killed in Blue Heelers. Like Heelers its had a pretty good run and there are only so many scenarios that can be covered I guess and if it cant be sold overseas its always going to be under the pump. Makes ya wonder if the overseas sales are all that is keeping H & A and Neighbours going year in year out with recycled storylines.

Didn't watch it religously but I can't understand this practice of axing popular Australian shows and then trying to start up new Australian shows that most times aren't anywhere near as good - I say this because you can bet your bottom dollar that Ch 7 will have a new Australian series on in a similar timeslot early next year.

Was on its last legs for a long time.

The new rescue ops stuff added a fair chunk to the budget.

But not the ratings.

Simply because shows have a limited shelf life.

All run out of puff eventually.

Twelve years is an extraordinary run.

Absolutely.

The only reason Neighbours is on air is because of the Channel Five's $700m eight year investment.

Not to mention the licensed foreign language versions of Neighbours around the world - the German version has been going for years.

Similar story with McLeod's - Nine sold it everywhere. Was big on Hallmark in North America...

I agree but there have been some axed that were still rating - if ratings are to be believed (but that's another story) - well at the end.
Understand to that some actors/actresses would wan't more and more once the show is established which would help blow costs out.

Was still pulling around 1.2m a week. Respectable numbers. But not enough to justify the rising budget.

Doubt if it was pulling much advertising $ either.

Actors.

They're the only one's who get a pay rise once a series gets the nod for another run...

Actress's dont?

They better get female tennis player's into bat for them given that they've pulled off one of the greatest heists for females in modern times.

Yeah, they do. Just using 'actors' in a general term.

Actresses probably have much more clout than their male colleagues in Oz TV...
