I'm sorry Dylan fans, but I can't stand his music.

I've seen jigsaw puzzles that have more musical rhythm than his music.

"Oh, but he was such a poet!" I head the die-hards cry in unison.

WRONG. He was just a stoned fool who wrote down whatever came to his head.

I could come up with Dylan-like lyrics.

"Sitting in a bar in West LA.
A guy offered me a drink, but he had no money.
Tension slowly rising, butterflies colliding.
So I punched him in the face."

Give me an album, hail me a genius.

The only musician in the world were every cover of his songs is better than his original.

Visionary my arse.

I'm amazed it took this long.

Before seeing Scorsese's No Direction Home doco a while ago I may have agreed you. I've since seen the light. Blonde on Blonde is truly wonderful as is the Royal Albert Hall ("Judas!") concert. I have no idea what it's about but Visions of Johanna gets me every time.

I've never really understood the attraction with his music either to be honest. Certainly did a lot for getting folk music more recognised as a popular genre, but as for what he actually "sings"...not for me either SS. Some of his lyrics read like ransom notes.

Half you blokes wouldn't know a visionary if he farted the taste of tomorrow through a straw up your noses.
Bob Dylan was a classic song writer. He chose to sing them himself as a lot of his songs are about the times they were written in and about the people of those times. The nature of his voice is that of a street prophet that calls out words of wisdom as you happen to pass him. It wasn't about musical exactitude. This especially applies to far reaching commentaries such as "The Times They are a Changing", "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", "Blowing In the Wind". The rawness of the music and voice highlights the irony of the common man, making sense where others have made confusion out of the society he finds himself in. When artists like Peter, Paul and Mary tried the same thing the results are more like a theater tragedy.
The list of classics goes on, but I am out of time here, and will have to leave you all hanging on...

That's a fantastic review of the man's significance.

I'm not a massive fan but I recognise the talent.

Obviously his music wasn't touched up in the studio enough for some. Maybe he should've found the vodocoder or whatever Kanye West is using in his songs these days

I'm no more enamoured with Kanye West or the music that some of the young folk of today listen to ..I recognise his impact on music and recognise his ability to write a song that many people like - I just don't have much time for his music myself.

Now, if we were talking about Little River Band or The Eagles, then, well....

Welcome to my world SS. I've spent nearly 40 years wondering if he's a genius or insane.
I like some songs but I can't stand his 'voice'. You've got to admit Dylan must have talent
if he can keep people guessing for so bloody long.

I have a few of his albums.

Not a huge fan....always thought I was missing something. Everyone "raved" how much this guy is a legend but could never find the "answer" to his music (was it blowing in the wind?)....

Slightly overated IMO....but must say I have a soft spot for the Travelling Willburys....best thing Dylan did
