The final 32 episodes of Number 96 were released on DVD last year by Umbrella Entertainment. Sadly you will never see the first two years released anywhere. In one of the more amazing pieces of wastage - and this story is 100% true - Channel 10 needed a display comprising used videotape, unspooled and draped around like streamers for a promotion in the 80's.

Among other tapes chosen were the first two years worth of MASTER TAPES of Number 96. The only way you'd ever see these is if anyone happened to tape them in any form of very early video tape. The remaining episodes were given to the Australian National Film and Sound Archive, however, so maybe they will be released down the track.

I've got a strong suspicion that, even if episodes were available, you would never see The Box released. A number of the characters were based on real life people and there were a lot of mutterings at the time about suing due to marked similarities between characters and real life (apparently both Reg Ansett and Sir Frank Packer used to marvel at the likeness borne by station head, Sir Henry Usher, to each other - each assumed it was based on the other. Years later, the chief scriptwriter confessed that Usher was actually based on Hector Crawford). Put simply, the consensus from some TV people is they couldn't take the risk of releasing it due to the strong possibility of legal action.

Atlantic DVD on Main North Rd are pretty good for getting anything in for you if it has ever been put onto DVD, they have been able to locate several rare ones for my collection!

Although its not an Aussie show "The Sweeney" is well worth a look! Another popular one from the BBC of an earlier era is "Special Branch". 8)
