Is it a worthy winner for playing the Joker or just public Sympathy?

IMO- Good movie, he acted great but alot of better supporting actors could have won.

I deem him a worthy winner, sure the sympathy vote may have helped, but he would have been around the mark anyway. Who and in which role would you have given it to before him?

I thought that young kid from Australia played a great supporting role for starters.

He played his part exceptionally well in that movie, so I certainly don't think a nomination is sympathy at all ... Whether he deserved to win the award or not I can't say as I haven't seen the competitors he was up against (or more to the point the roles they portrayed to receive nomination).

Anyone got a list of who he was up against, and which roles they played?

The list is here:

Dean Laidley- For his betrayal of a happy go lucky football coach willing to answer any media questions.
Paris Hilton - For her tear jerking role as a dumb blonde out spending Daddy's fortune. My pick to be honest.
Amiele Mauresmo - For his wonderful effort in displaying the trials and tribulations of a professional sports cross gender athlete.

Ledger, just in front of Hilton for mine.

Best Supporting Actor
Tom Cruise - Tropic Thunder
Robert Downey Jnr. - Tropic Thunder
Ralph Fiennes - The Duchess
Philip Seymour Hoffman - Doubt
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight

Wasn't much competition, apart from PSH.

Maybe the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is becoming like the Academy in making up for past mistakes and giving out gongs to actors who were criminally overlooked previously.

Because Ledger should've got the GG and the Oscar for Brokeback Mountain.

I thought that young kid from Australia played a great supporting role for starters.

Speaking of hype.

Baz Luhrmann directed Brandon Walters to be a living, breathing stuffed toy - cute and adoring.

There was no acting.

'Australia' was an overhyped loada old wank that predictably bombed at the box office overseas! :toimonster:
The only award it deserves is the
'Head up his own Arse' award for Baz Luhrmann!

Heath Ledger WAS awesome as the Joker in Dark Knight however!
