Best Car Chase in a Film

I've often wondered what is regarded as the best car chase made for film.

I used to really like the one in the Steven Seagal movie - the one with the Rastafarians who drove a BMW through a shopping mall - but then when Ronin came out I haven't found one to eclipse that (that I recall anyway).

Thoughts? Tips?

I think those televised top 100 type shows always have the one from the original Italian Job as one of the best.

But I think the one they put top is The French Connection??? possible senior moment here cos I haven't seen it for years but it goes on for ages and they race through a US city under a railway line :?

I quite enjoyed the one in the Blues Brothers and dare I say It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

The French Connection chase is intense and the scary thing is that they didn't have the safety standards of today so basically they just drove the cars under the bridge at full tilt and almost cleaned up a pedestrian and (IIRC) may have injured one of the lead actors in an accident.

I have never seen it but Steve McQueen's Bullitt car chase often gets the gong for best chase.

The Bourne car chases are great. Mad Max I and II have some very intense truck/car chases.

The Fast and the Furious and Gone in 60 seconds also come to mind.

It didn't really involve a car chase in the conventional sense, but seeing this thread makes me remember the Cannonball Run movies, which i used to enjoy in the early 80's.

A bit obscure, but To Live and Die in LA has a good chase scene:

Producer Philip D'Antoni made Bullitt before The French Connection.

He told TFC director Billy Friedkin that he had just shot the greatest car chase in movie history on Bullitt and wanted to top it.

They did.

There's a great doco about the car chase on The French Connection special edition.

Basically, Friedkin sat in the back seat with a camera and called the stunt driver every name under the sun to p!ss him off and really make him fang it!

Ronin is my personal favourite, just ahead of the second Bourne movie, when matt damon is chased by the Russian hired killer through the streets of Moscow.

Bullitt is outstanding for it's time, with far less camera tricks they could use. The shot of the guy doing up his seat belt when it starts to get serious is a cracker.

For completely made up chases, the second Matrix is very good, but they went and built their own road and used green screens for huge parts of it.

As it turns out Friedkin also directed To Live and Die in LA, so he was an old hand when it came the chase scene in that movie.

Yep.

One was made when he was at the top of his game.

The other when he was pretty much washed up...

The end. Takes the piss out of the whole concept of car chases brilliantly. Loved the glue on the redneck special to get rid of 'The Good Ole Boys'.
