Critique this "To see" list of recent movies

Postby Sploosh » Mon Nov 03, 2008 8:52 pm

I've only been to the movies once in the past few years, and haven't really even seen many DVDs in the last few years either. But, I'm trying to catch up on a few in the next couple of months. I've been picking over a few lists on this site and elsewhere, and have made the list below.

I'm looking for good, interesting, intelligent movies; action, suspense, intruige etc and definitely no soppy "romance comedy" rubbish. Any title that you think I should add to / delete from the list below? All ideas much appreciated!

Bourne trilogy (yep, haven't seen any of them)
There will be blood
Ratatouille
Michael Clayton
3:10 to Yuma
Before the devil knows you’re dead
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
American Gangster
Death at a Funeral
The Last King of Scotland
The Dark Knight
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Burn After Reading
Be Kind Rewind
In Bruges
Capote
Bad Santa
The Manchurian Candidate
Body of Lies
Casino Royale
The Bank Job
Syriana

A very good list of movies there. One to add is Gone Baby Gone.
Boourne Trilogy-All good movies especially the 3rd.
There Will Be Blood-Excellent acting by Daniel Day Lewis.
Michael Clayton-Should have been much better, but worth a look nonetheless.
3.10 To Yuma-Great story and acting, just a litttle far fetched at the end.
Before The Devil Knows You're Dead-Same as Michael Clayton
Assassination-Very good. Great acting and story.
American Gangster-Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe-need I say more?
Death At A Funeral-Overated,don't bother
The Last King Of Scotland-Must see, great acting and story
The Dark Knight-Excellent acting, but probably a bit long winded.
Burn After Reading-Welll worth it very funny, although it ends suddenly like they had to tie up all the endings and stop at at precise time.
Be Kind Rewind-Idea is good, but it didn't keep my attention
Casino Royale-New style Bond, good action sequences
Syriana-In my opinion the best of the list. Very relevant to the times we are in. You will find you watch it more than once and it gets better each time.

Haven't seen the others, hope this helps.......

Bourne trilogy - New benchmark for action flicks.
There Will Be Blood - Anderson inches closer to a masterpiece. One scene too long.
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead - Taut thriller. Like watching a car crash.
American Gangster - Suffers from trying to give two Oscar winners equal screen time.
Death at a Funeral - Avoid at all costs. Hideously unfunny.
The Last King of Scotland - Disappointing. Except for Forest Whitaker.
The Dark Knight - An overrated mess.
Bad Santa - Bad movie.
Casino Royale - Not a Bond fan but this is enjoyable. Last half-hour lets it down.
Syriana - Pay attention!

Casino Royale - Probably my favourite moofie. I could watch it over and over again.
Mainly cos I can't stop looking at Eva Green's eyes, but it is an awesome moofie.

Ratatouille-- On the Menu page be sure to click on the tab marked "Lifted". Very funny little short cartoon.

Thanks for those opinions, guys. Wow, most of you sure have seen a lot of movies; I've come to the right place. Sounds like I'll be deleting DEath at a Funeral, and Indiana Jones might be heading the same way as well.

Still gotta see 'em, Sploosh.

Otherwise, you can't say - with conviction - how crap they are.

Hmmm... it's an interesting point. Waste 4 hours, and be able to genuinely say "They were crap", or go my whole life simply assuming they were crap. A dilemma. Maybe I'll leave them to last, and then watch 'em to prove how good the rest of the flicks were. :) What's a person to do? :D

The thing about movies is that if you see a bad one it's just two hours of your time you can't get back, but if your in one it's usually a couple of years of your life.

The Bank Job is not too bad for a gangster action heist conspiracy film, and Saffron Burrows is just delicious.....

Only ones I've mangaed to see from the list are...

Bourne trilogy...seen the first 2 and loved them...not too glossy or full of beautiful people if you know what I mean. The story's are good enough to sell the films without the need to go over-the-top on the sex and violence stuff...will get around to the last one.

The Manchurian Candidate...very, very good and well made imho. Meryl Streep is so evil and will make you feel so uncomfortable...hope you don't have 'mother' issues

Syriana...fantastic film...very believable storyline and an excellent cast. As has been said already...concentrate  it jumps between three stories but obviously will make sense eventually...worth watching more than once.

Regards
JAS
