Network Ten is set to unveil a 24-hour sports channel.

The network will throw down the gauntlet to Fox Sports and its free-to-air rivals next month, when it unveils plans for a high-definition channel to run sport around the clock.

Ten has been systematically buying up big sporting events including at Sportel - the global tradeshow of sporting rights - held in Monaco last week.

Ten now owns the rights to show Australian swimming, US NBA Basketball, US Major League baseball, US Open golf and tennis championships and the US Masters Golf.

The network will broadcast AFL games again next season and it recently purchased the rights to televise the Trans-Tasman Netball League.

Ten, which also owns rights to IPL Cricket and all Formula One Grand Prix events, is expected to announce its new dedicated sports channel in mid-November.

I hope we can pick it up regionallly over here in Pt Lincoln. In winter I can occasionally pick up Nine & Ten HD channels and can view them consistently most of the time in summer, but they always seem to have interference when there is something on that I really want to watch!

We won't get it here in the Riverland.

HD programming for 7/10 isn't available already, so not much chance of us getting this station either.

If this new channel shows the NBL, goodbye Foxtel.

That will be bloody excellent. Ten will dominate the ratings. This is a brilliant idea, and better yet....it's free!!

I noticed that they have been showing the NFL on TenHD on weekdays from midday already.

so could channel 7 create a 24 hour footy channel ???

That would require effort.

Something Ch 7 are clearly not prepared to give in their current football coverage.

If it replays the SANFL, WAFL and VFL matches of the round during the week - like a certain public free-to-air station used to do - then I'd be interested.

Fox Footy Channel is very sadly missed....

From what I understand when this channel starts in April it will be a digital channel much like ABC2. I don't believe it will be HD but like ABC2 you'll still need a set top box to see it.

This would be the greatest thing ever! I don't have foxtel and have been thinking about getting it for the sports channels, but now with this coming out, i don't think i will be needing it for a while!!

Add to that Foxtel will be shitting themselves and the price will have to come down if 9 and 7 follow suit buying up rights.

It sounds great, but I hope that it doesn't boil down to the occassional interesting event, surrounded by 23 hours of darts*, 10-pin bowling* and other obscure 'sport' that no one has heard of and even less people care about. If channel 10 are actually going to do this, then they need to actually have some decent stuff and make it worth everyone's while. And yep, Foxtel can take a running jump at themselves.

They cover the F1, a fair bit of the golf, IPL, Footy etc. For our Summer would be fantastic for them to get Bundesliga/Serie A/La Liga/Eredivisie
etc. Fox has the rights for the EPL/Championship but get one of the other major Football Leagues would be fantastic.

If they get NBL/NBA etc then they'll be on their way. Fox would be 5hitting themselves, as that's the reason most people get it....Sport.
