Foxtel.

After many years of arguing against the merit of pay TV,I have given into family pressure and had Foxtel installed, full pack,IQ kit and kaboodle.

My question to every one is,what the friggin' hell was I thinking not having it? Im not a tight arse,I spend money like its going out of fashion, yet was not willing to pay for watching what I could (in a limited capacity) get for free. What a clown.

Who else has the full pack, and if you dont, what dont you have, and do you want it?

Got the Platinum Package,no IQ though. Hope you enjoy it,it is a buzz when you first get it although you will be surprised how soon you start to surf the channels looking for something worthwhile to watch! A bit like the Pink Floyd song goes "I've got 16 channels of shit on the TV to choose from".

I have no trouble spending money either and I suppose the cost for me is only $3 a day(I get 15% off being an employee),but in my opinion the value for money is declining. The picture quality is still piss poor, too many ads,too many never watched channels that you have to have to get the ones you want.

Hope I didn't rain on your parade Booney.

How 'bout the Bruce Springsteen one - '57 channels and nothin on'

Seriously though, I have Austar, the base package plus sport. If I didn't have the sport, I wouldn't have it. If you love your sport - worth every cent.
I'm claiming it on tax ;)

Get IQ Kahuna, then you'll never miss those shows you never wanna watch!

Seriously, I was going to get a splitter so I had a box in my lounge and the kids room. We got talked into IQ and the guy said at the time "you wont regret it". We don't, we love it. Pausing live TV is the absolute bonus. Phone calls are no more meant with angst, cos you can just pause it, take the call and resume normal programming! Even on Ch 2, 7, 9 & 10, because we've got cable, we can do the same thing.

The ability for me to sit here at my desk, peruse the on line guide and then hit "record" from my desk is just brilliant and means that even if I get to work I still don't have to miss anything that's on the TV during the day.

Ads, schmads. Using IQ, you fast forward through them at 30x!

I think having Fox without IQ is ok if you're not used to IQ. Cos seriously once you go IQ you'd never go back.

I used to have just normal Foxtel until the VCR died, my wife got sick of me whinging that I couldn't record anything so she organised IQ for me.

Best thing they ever came out with. Have to agree with the online TV guide and doing the remote record, can even do it from my mobile phone now.

The kids have their channels, the wife has got hers and I've got my sports. One of the main reasons I've got it.

Not enough people in this flat ,brown land we call Oz mate, for pay tv
to survive just on subscriptions.
Good thing though, about the footy coverage is that there are no ads after goals.
Can't stomach the network telecasts anymore.
CI is a great channel as well as watching 50+ year old Bugs Bunny cartoons on Boomerang.

You'd pay more for the programs if it wasn't for the ads amigo. Just as long as your lad doesn't do what mine does and sing along! Drives me 'Balmey' I won't pay for the carp movies that they put on but have the kids and sport pack and I love my History and C&I channel but (History Channel) has been a bit rank lately. Up in Qld Foxtel is a must. Nothing like watching live Friday Night football on 518 when I couldn't do the same when living in a football state. The biggest laugh on Pay TV is the Biography channel that insists on telling us all about pampered **** movie stars instead of people who have actually led intersting lives. Who gives a ****??

REB

Smithy, i get SBS and two on Austar.

But you're right about 7,9,10.

As for complaining about ads, they keep the prices affordable.
The only reason there were no ads on pay tv when it first started in Australia was to keep people like Kerry Packer happy, as they were worried about losing the revenue.

I have normal foxtel and enjoy having it .When we first got it TV shows were first in fee tv then Fox unless free tv didnt want it. And I started watching some of these "repeats" on Fox less ADDS .Now if say the new SVU is on 10 I tape it and watch it latter FF the ADDs .Or wait for tv shows to come to Fox from Free TV like shows on UKTV,funny they are on free tv then a week latter on fox.
Now I have noticed that some shows appear first on fox and then Free tv.The latest being Dexter it will be cut to hell on free tv.
So who says paying so much for the footy rights has not hurt free tv

We got Foxtel two years ago for the sport. This time of year we are in Rugby Union heaven. We like our Discovery and Nat Geo channels, Lifestyle and Showcase.

Is that for sure? Are they having the HD Channels?

If so I reckon Ill upgrade to the new HD IQ and not worry about a Hard drive recorder...

I have always found the picture quality when Fox shows footy to be pretty variable but yesterday I think they sank to a new low.Watching Melbourne and Brisbane, players on the opposite side of the ground appeared more as blobs than identifiable players. I could tell which team they were but could not tell who they were. Then lo and behold a banner ad popped up on the screen informing me that the game was available on FoxtelHD. My conspiracy chip immediately kicked in with the view that Foxtel had wound back the PQ as an inducement for subscribers to consider HD.

I will admit the second game looked better so it may just have been some issue specific to the ground or could it have been a marketing ploy? Am I a cynic? Anyone else?

I recorded the Glenelg Sturt game on Foxtel via Ch2, and that was quite ordinary.

and regarding Ads to keep subscription prices down. They say there are now over 1000000 subscribers in Oz, and if most are Platinum, like I am, paying 105.95 per month, Thats nearly $100, 000, 000 per month turn over, or $1200000000 per year. So how much does it cost to run Foxtel if they have to sell advertising to cover expenses? ( please excuse the amout of 0's, I couldnt be bothered working it out in Billions :D )
