I've found that myself. In The Blind Watchmaker he was very open about his position, claimed that the work was meant to be pro-evolution and to hell with those who would disagree. Nevertheless in Unweaving the Rainbow his attitude came off much as you describe above. Probably a good thing that I'm on his side, otherwise I wouldn't have enjoyed his books half as much 8)

Having completed it today, I have to say that Dawkins is only fighting fire with fire.
The Fundamentalist lobby in the US is frighteningly powerful, so I think this is a criticism
that comes from his opponents. Dawkins backs his argument(s) up with a lot more facts & truth
and this, in my opnion , gives him more credibility.
Although I consider myself fairly intelligent,I hesitated to read it for a while,
fearing it may have had too much psycho babble but Dawkins wrote it with the layman in mind.
Although I had to read the chapter on MEMES a couple of times to get the thread of it.
But don't ask me what its about because I'd have a hard time explaining it.
I'm off to get Christopher Hitchens' "A Portable Atheist" tomorrow as it looks like another good read

Have just finished reading Les Favell's autobiog.
Bad, bad, bad. Nothing more than a recount of every first class game he played.
I wanted to learn a bit more about the man and the blokes he played with, but all I got was something like this:

"I got into to the changerooms and decided to have some toast. I set the toaster to medium brown. It must have been helpful as I went out and threw caution to the wind and hit up a 130 against Victoria. Bill Lawry was not happy. I slept contendly that night.
We then moved on to our next shield match in Western Australia. Bob Blewett could not play and Ken Cunningham came into the side. He ran me out." And so on, and so on.

I hate those type of cricket books!!!!!

Now reading a collection of Max Fatchen's columns.

Good to see another Baldacci reader, even if the book has taken a back seat. Have read almost all of his. Loved them all except 'Wish You Well' which was written in a different style to his usual.

"The Wisdom of Crowds" By James Surowiecki.
Contains interesting bits of trivia, such as a traffic dept in the U.S in search of how traffic jams are created, sent a car travelling at a mere 30 miles an hour down a stretch of a two lane highway with no intersections or other encumberances, and with a 60 mph speed limit. They discovered that owing to the traffic changing lanes to get out of the slow lane, (and hence causing the other lane to slow down, in turn creating slower traffic making those cars want to change lanes etc.) the two lanes actually carried less traffic in half an hour than one lane would have carried travelling at thirty mph.
Rivetting eh?

Thought I might as well add this here rather than start a thread for it...some titles you might like to add to your reading lists

LONDON (AFP) - "If You Want Closure In Your Relationship, Start With Your Legs" ran away with top prize of oddest book title of the year in Britain, according to a new poll.

The book, described as a "self-help manual written by a man for the benefit of women," pipped "I Was Tortured By the Pygmy Love Queen" into second place, followed by "Cheese Problems Solved" in the poll for the Bookseller magazine.

"The winner .. makes redundant an entire genre of self-help tomes. So effective is the title that you don't even need to read the book itself," said Joel Rickett, deputy editor of the publishing industry weekly.

The Bookseller's diarist Horace Bent, who organizes the awards, questioned his bosses' decision a few years ago to change the way the winner is selected -- from a decision by him to an online poll, which this year drew 8,500 votes.

"The public: you just can't trust them," he said.

"Among the many problems with letting the unwashed masses decide... is their debased vulgarity," he added, noting a previous winner chosen by readers was "High Performance Stiffened Structures."

"A fine work about professional engineering, to be sure, but I fear it was favoured for other reasons."

Previous winners of the Oddest Book Title of the Year include:

- 1997: "The Joy of Sex: Pocket Edition."

- 1998: "Development in Dairy Cow Breeding and Management: and New Opportunities to Widen the Uses of Straw."

- 1999: "Weeds in a Changing World."

- 2000: "High Performance Stiffened Structures."

- 2001: "Butterworths Corporate Manslaughter Service."

- 2002: "Living with Crazy Buttocks."

- 2003: "The Big Book of Lesbian Horse Stories."

- 2004: "Bombproof Your Horse."

- 2005: "People Who Don't Know They're Dead: How They Attach Themselves to Unsuspecting Bystanders and What to Do About It by Gary Leon Hill."

- 2006: "The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America: A Guide to Field Identification."
