Seriously, that Asterix book is yours for free if you want it; it's crap. In fact all of 'em were crap from the point where Rene Goscinny passed away. Uderzo might be a great illustrator but he can't write a story to save his life.

I have about a dozen Asterix/Tintin books written in their native French language. Earlier this decade I made a concerted effort to learn French, even took lessons for 2 years. Stumbling across a copy of Asterix Chez Les Bretons in a second-hand bookshop was a revelation - I discovered that comic books are the BEST way to study another language. The writing is often simple and the pictures provide contextual information to help understanding.

There was a live-action Asterix movie made (starring Gerard Depardieu as Obelix!) in French. I caught it on SBS a while back. I think pretty much all of the books of the original canon were made into animated features. I've seen them for sale on the cheap at those "island" stalls which temporarily pop up in the middle of shopping centres.

Loved Asterix as a kid and have all 40-odd of them. Also have the Lucky Luke books, which were great, v the Daltons.

Great reading and my kids read them now

Yep my favourite comix as a kid we've got them all up Asterix and Son.

Psuedo is right, was Goscinny passed away the stories lost their edge and were too full of modern cliches

The movies get shown over here occasionally...still good fun...Dogmatix rocks Fond...ish memories of using the Asterix books at school to learn French. Was never keen on learning languages but at least using comicbook drawings made it more fun.

The greatest comic book i ever read was Ginger Meggs, written by Jim Banks, not the crap written by Kemsley in the Sunday Mail. My dad purchased a "best of" collection of Ginger Meggs in the early 80's and it was a great read.

The other comic i read regularly in the 80's was Archie, although i did read a bit of Tintin as well, much preferred this to Asterix.

Was a big Asterix fan in late primary/early high school. Have about a dozen scattered somewhere in the house...
