That end battle was about as convincing as the Ewoks winning in Return of the Jedi. How come the arrows could suddenly take out helicopters?

The special effects were awesome but didn't compensate for the excruciating dialogue and the fact that Colonel 'You're not in Kansas any more' took half an hour to die.

Great comments fisho. About 45 mins into it I was thinking it could nudge it's way into 5 star territory, but once the special effects wore off on me and the story ground slowly to its lamo conclusion I left disappointed.

If the 'naughties' are remembered for anything when it comes to movie making it will be:
- the rise of computer generated special effects
- the over-reliance on said special effects over a good script

Note to filmmakers for the 2010's - funnel some of those millions away from special effects and into a decent scriptwriting team.

With special effects and reality TV why would anybody bother learning to write creatively? You'll be waiting many a year.

I guess its (as it always is) a case of each to their own.

Avatar wont win any acting or script gongs - Far from it, but being someone who has always enjoyed Sci-Fi and/or futuristic movies, and experiencing 3D for the first time, I found it very entertaining ... It wasn't one of those movies where I was moved or touched by any great performance, but it was fun.

Sometimes I think you need to judge things by what they are intended to be, and as with most of todays Box Office money grabbers they are meant to be pretty much mindless action fillums ... Those movies are a dime a dozen so you have to be lucky to catch one that is half enjoyable, which I reakon Avatar is.

Great sci-fi is pretty thin on the ground these days.
Dunno why, there are some fantastic books out there to re-create, now we have the special effects to do them justice.

I saw Avatar on Tuesday night in big screen, big sound, 3D and was thoroughly entertained
from start to finish. The 'eco' message to protect nature from commercial rape was pretty
full on, but I didn't go along to be critical, I went to enjoy some well crafted escapism and
Avatar delivered 'in spades', or should that be bulldozers ?
It was 'Tree-mend-us'
Loved it !

I, Robot is a case study on how things can go oh-so easily awry.

Early in its development, it stayed pretty true to Asimov.

Then Wil Smith signed on.

And with Wil Smith does comes his hack writer mate, Akiva Goldsman.

Suddenly it becomes a high concept, special effects driven, action shoot 'em up.

Still enjoyed the movie but it was miles away from what it was supposed to be...

I agree with many about Avatar. Ridiculously corny dialogue at times, and very stereotypical characters, but thoroughly entertaining and really pretty to look at. Not high art, but most movies aren't. Perhaps some are being critical because of the huge money spent on the film... but if you don't think about things too much, it's just some fun. Oh, and definitely empty the bladder just before... I think they could do away with the 30 minutes of ads, 'coming movies' etc

Just watched Something Wild (1987) featuring Melanie Griffith, Jeff Daniels and Ray Liotta last night.

Liotta so convincing as a nut case and Griffiths definitely at her 'best' ;)

For a few laughs , try to find " Very Bad Things " next time you are at the video store. A batchelor party gone wrong, made years ago, long before "The Hangover" ( which is also fun ) . Cameron Diaz is great as a crazy bride too .

Is there a crap movies thread? If so, can someone copy and paste this to it? "Fighting" would have to be one of the most patchetic movies I have ever seen in my life.
So you've seen everything have you?

Yeah agree has elements of the Hangover although a bit darker. Has Christian Slater in it from memory but pretty funny.

Watched The Taking of Pelham 123 and Funny People on the weekend.

Thought Travolta was pretty good in 123, and the movie was an easy one to watch. No concentration needed.

Funny People had its moments, but anything with Seth Rogan in it tends to give me the shits because he is not funny and invariably turns a comedy into a romantic comedy eg: Zach and Miri Make a Porno and Knocked Up.

That might be because Seth Rogan wrote both of them...so they would of been rom-coms all along...he also wrote superbad, 40 year old virgin, pineapple express, observe and report...and was a writer and actor in Freaks and Geeks, and Undeclared when he was a teenager...

If you havent noticed, I have a massive man crush on Seth Rogan :D
