I agree

Firstly, the media seemed to have rounded up the cost estimate to $200m when before it was $173M. Other news reports say $130m. :? :?

As for the takings: as per the Rotten Tomatoes website it's already taken $20m and I am pretty sure that's just in the US. It will keep building and then there'll be the stage 2 which will be the DVD release.

It's a strange one in terms of how polarising it is - for every person that didn't like it there seems to be 1-2 who reckon they loved it. I'll catch it on DVD myself and make my own mind up.

I plan to catch it in the theaters here in Japan once they round up enough actors to do the voice overs. I should say "if" they find enough actors to do the voice overs or if they could even be screwed making a translation, if it is bad as what people are saying. I am interested in seeing how these overseas folk react to this ostentatiously named movie, and finding out first hand what all the talk is about.

From the previews I have seen of it, it seemed like it was going to be something that would give a much-needed big boost to Australian tourism (plus our current Aussie dollar would make it even better to come here at the moment). So even if the movie sucks something good will come from it.

Big is not epic.

Luhrmann strives for David Lean but comes short of Michael Bay (Pearl Harbor is clearly the superior film.)

Australia is a corny, cliched cartoon, McLeod's Daughters with a big-budget. It will go gangbusters on the Hallmark Channel.

The most ridiculous scene in this ridiculous film: when they blackface Nullah (the Aboriginal boy) with campfire ash so he can go see The Wizard of Oz at the picures. Next thing he's sitting in the cinema looking like a 12 year-old Al Jolson. Seriously.

I half expected Sam Newman as Nicky Winmar to pop up for a cameo.

The Darwin bombing, where the action picks up a bit, is just tacked-on.

Given the talent and toys at the filmmakers' disposal, dollar for dollar - this is the worst Australian film ever made.

Started off 2009 in style by seeing Australia - not the worst movie I've ever seen but also not close to the best one either. I found the first half of the movie tedious - too many cattle muster type scenes that probably needed Russell Coight in there somewhere to "help his mates out with a muster". And Russell would have been a lot cheaper than Hugh Jackman to hire! Movie definitely picked up once Darwin got bombed.

sorry for the bump but wanted to add my bit... saw Australia, Gold Class style at Marion yesterday..( overall I thought it was quite good.. not too many coloquisms (sp)... i even thought the lady using the "crikey" expression towards the end was quite charming. The little aboriginal child is an endearing little soul and I liked the link with the dreamtime and magic (my dh thought it was a little over the top - he also thought the movie was too corney for his liking) the surround sound (rumbling) during the stampede scene was deafening but really effective. i thought nicole kidman did well in a not overly challenging role and Hugh was good as "Drover" (the washing scene was the best).... im glad we chose this movie to see Gold Glass and I must say I enjoyed it immensely.. the ending however was disappointing imho.. i would give it a strong 7 / 10 but of course that just my personal opinion :D
RIP my DH 1964 - 2009 - You were one of the best and I miss you
