Haven't read any of it myself, but the HBO tv adaption (with Martin's collaboration) is awesome.

Interesting, but it seems to be taking Bligh's side rather than being a balanced account.

I'm pretty sure I heard an interview with the author of this book.
He suggested that Bligh's character had been impugned enough over the years and he'd been given shoddy treatment in every other account of the issue.
I don't think he was related to Bligh, either.

Not really knowing a huge amount about the subject I suggest he may be right. For a man to lose first a ship, then an entire colony would leave him open to ridicule despite the fact that he might not have acted improperly or incompetently at all, but I would rather books on history were a little more balanced.

Recently finished:

The Ballad of Desmond Kale by Roger McDonald - ugh, hated it. Few of the characters had any redeeming qualities.

Oceana Fine by Tom Flood - Don't read this if you're drunk, you'll need your wits to get around its complexities. But I enjoyed it.

Fallen Hearts by Virginia Andrews - main character rooted her uncle, which really sums up most of Andrews' work.

Currently reading The Mango Tree by Ronald McKie. So far I'm really liking it. Stunning imagery.

Praise by Andrew McGahan.

Not pretty and fairly confronting. He knows how to tell a good story, one that should resonate with a lot of Australians. I read the whole thing in one sitting - couldn't put it down. I'm going to hunt down some more of his work now.

Try "The White Earth" Fisho. Won the Miles Franklin a few years back and is a fantastic piece of Australian fiction.

I'm not searching for a pic of the cover.

"Open Season" by Jason Akermanis...

First chapter is about getting sacked, so I don't think it's in any sort of order...
