The Octonauts are also a current favourite

And I had forgotten to mention Timmy Time before others rightly pointed it out as must see kids TV :D

That's a tough question, and one that can't be answered accurately. It's much like a debate about the best era for music; people are almost always going to choose TV shows/music/movies etc from the time they grew up.

But is variety such a good thing when the quality of some shows is lacking?

i reckon the staple kids show i remember watching was sesame street. wasn't a huge fan of playschool back then, but i actually enjoy it more now then i did when i was a youngster  a creative lot they are.
i think variety is good. it's not like kids are looking for a good plot or brewing romance story  . bright colors and music and some learning is what gets there attention

My Kids both still love (and it was my eldest's absolute favourite for a long time) the old Tom and Jerry cartoons we had as kids. However, they both kicked up a stink when the new versions came on and they refused to watch them.

That's the only comparison I can make.

Would probably need to sit them down in front of Heckle & Jeckle, The Herculoids, Wacky Races etc and see how they take to them.

It's interesting my boys got doses of both verisons because Foxtel seems to interchange both versions in the same timeslot. So they like both equally but it may have been different had they been used to one version before the other.

The interesting test case for our generation of kids shows is surely my all time favourite kids show the Thunderbirds! My boys haven't seen the Thunderbirds yet.

I think the toddler shows have improved leaps and bounds, but as they get older, the quality drops off.
Octonauts, Timmy Time, Peppa Pig, In the Night Garden, Bananas in Pyjamas, Shaun the Sheep (same creators as Timmy Time?), Mr Maker, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Thomas (without Ringo :o ), Mike the Knight, Wot Wots, Wiggles, Charlie Bear, Giggle & Hoot, Grandpa in my Pocket, Yo Gabba Gabba, Fifi and Zigby, Babar, Angelina Ballerina, Pingu, Little Princess, & Charlie & Lola, to name a few.

Boy not keen on- Dirt Girl World & Playschool (and listening/behaving/being quiet...)

Peppa Pig is weird.
Seriously.

My girl used to like it. She's 6 now... doesn't watch it as much.

She loves iCarly and Victorious.
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

Best kids entertainment currently on telly is The Aquabats Super Show. Keeps myself AND my youngest (5yo) glued to the screen for half an hour. Liked 'em so much I've bought a couple of their albums.
