They might not have much to do with the actual production but their name is enough to push it over the line.
Few in Australia have this much clout - network bosses and heads of drama/programming but not many more.
Even a big production company like Southern Star might have to pitch as many as 10-12 series' before one gets up.
Even then, it still might get canned after the pilot is made.
But just what sort of royalties would be associated with coming up with even the best idea for a TV show ever? I imagine the more input and time spent by an individual developing a certain idea would reflect how much they earned from the fruition of that idea.
This is why so many writers, who are usually the show creators, are so keen on getting producing credits - $$$.
The long list of producers you see before every American TV show is mainly made up of writers.
But it all depends on the deal you sign.

Could be $1 or it could be a mill.
So many variables such as the author, is the book a bestseller, what is the film's budget and so on.
The rights to the big books are snapped when they're still in the galleys.
