 Not much not to dislike there Snaggletooth. I particularly like the all inclusive Birdman/New Christs and New Race.
I take exception to the Iron Shieks at #10 though. Bunch of bloody try hards with a crap percussion section. Never get a North supporter and a Glenelg too try and work together.

Top 10 Favourite cricket books.

1. The Bradman Diary - 1991.
Not much to read, apart from a few statistical facts, but it takes pride of place in my collection because it is signed by The Don.

2. Brightly Fades The Don. Jack Fingleton
I've just finished reading this after being given it by a friend. A fantastic look at The Invincibles tour of 1948. Reads more like a travelogue at times and features a fantastic chapter in which George Duckworth takes Fingleton to meet Harold Larwood. Fingleton provides praise of Bradman but doesn't worship him and some of the needle that existed between them is evident in the coverage of the tour. Fantastic read.

3. The Ashes, Chappell's Revenge (82/83). Michael Carey.
Why wouldn't you want to read about Marsh, Lillee and Thommo on fire and winning Australia back the Ashes? Just before Australia's slide to the foot of the cricketing ladder - probably Chappell's last great campaign as player and captain. Infamous for the Alderman incident. So high in my list as it was the first cricket book given to me by my grandfather.

4. Mystery Spinner - The Story of Jack Iverson. Gideon Haigh.
Jack who? Exactly and that's why this one is so enchanting. Haigh, who weaves words as well as Iverson turned the ball, does an exemplary job of telling us about this modest spinner whose life ultimately turned to tragedy. A wonderful read.

5. A Wayward Genius - The Fleetwood-Smith Story. Greg Growden.
As you can see I have a bent for reading about those cricketers who graced the field during the classic 30s period. It wasn't just Bradman, there were blokes like McCabe, a young Barnes, O'Reilly and Grimmett and then there was Chuck Fleetwood Smith. As enigmatic as Iverson who followed him but more debonair. While Bradman was feted like a rock-star, Chuck lived the rock-star life. He was Errol Flynn on a cricket field. Growden brings his story to life well.

6. On Top Down Under - Australia's Cricket Captains. Ray Robinson.
The Prince of Australian cricket writers to many, Robinson tells us the history of each of the men to lead the nation into cricketing battle. He gets to the nub of each captain and tells it as it was but has sympathy for the flaws of some of our leaders. The first edition apparently has many inaccuracies, so look for the revised edition, co-authored by Gideon Haigh. I have both.

7. Calypso Cricket. Roland Fishman.
Love it or hate it, this book (studying Australia's 1991 tour of the West Indies) set pulses racing at the time. It was a true expose of what it was like to be a touring cricketer in the early 90s. Sometimes the cricket action was secondary. Somehow naive to allowing a pressman to have so much access to write about the national team, the Australian cricketers and board were unhappy with the end result. Salacious to say the least. Blame Greg Matthews. Worth a read if nothing else to point the direction in which some forms of sports journalism ultimately headed in this country.

8. Beyond Ten Thousand. Allan Border.
This is a colourful history of the man who led Australia out of the doldrums. A highly anticipated release at a time in which AB could do no wrong. The title tells of a time when runs had to be scrimped and saved and 10,000 runs was a very rare achievement.
Pugsley was my first cricketing hero and this is probably the ultimate look at his playing days.

9. Any Old Eleven. Jim Young.
A surprise packet for me. This is a nostalgic look at the world of club cricket. Jim is a writer who plays park cricket and he takes us through a season on the field. You get a real sense of what its like to be part of a team - a rubbish one at that - and it reminds you of why you put yourself through that pain in your own sport every week.

10. Cricket Crisis. Jack Fingleton.
Which young cricket fan hasn't heard of Bodyline? It was a series that fired a nation and saw it strive to assert more independence from the Mother Country. An over-reaction from the young upstart nation, possibly. But the times were different back then. As far as series reviews go, you couldn't get one from a person who was closer to the action. Fingleton was right amongst it - even allegedly leaking the famous Woodfull quote to English team manager 'Plum' Warner to his mates in the press (Fingleton was a working journo as well as cricketer at the time). While, Woodfull's quote has gone down in history, my favourite from this series (whether it was actually said or not) was from VY Richardson - "Which one of you bas*ards called this bas*ard a bast*rd". Cricket Crisis sits behind Brightly Fades The Don, purely because Fingleton's writing had improved significantly in the intervening years. The copy I have is very well thumbed and was owned by my grandfather who passed on his love for the game and respect for its traditions to me.

No room for Ten Turbulent Years, DW?

7. Calypso Cricket. Roland Fishman.

Mo made the mistake of thinking Fishman was his mate after writing his biography a few years before.

But for writers, the story is ALWAYS more important...

'Merv, the Full Story' doesn't get a run in your list? 8)

Good varied selection which you could have easily filled with 10 books by Gideon, particularly his ones on the WSC seasons 'the Cricket War' and his biography on Warwick Armstrong
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Gideon, particularly his ones on the WSC seasons 'the Cricket War'

One day Channel Nine will come to their senses and make a mini-series about this in the great Kennedy-Miller tradition of Bodyline and The Dismissal.

However, casting Kerry Packer would be a nightmare.

Reakon only one man has the balls and the ego big enough to play him...

Russell Crowe.

Covers the first ten years after World Series Cricket - 1977-1987.

Different authors write different chapters - Ian Chappell, Richie Benaud, David Hill, Ian Woolridge, Henry Blofield and Alan McGilvray to name a few.

A fly-on-the-wall, first-hand account of the 'cricket revolution.'

Definitely a worthy addition to your collection.
