Similar to Paul Newman.

And, dare I say it, Tom Cruise.

Heart-throb status counts against him.

But a great actor.

Tom Cruise

Days of Thunder - Hot shot race car driver
Top Gun - Hot shot pilot
Colour of Money - Hot shot pool player
Mission Impossibles - Hot shot spy
The Firm, a few good men - Hot shot lawyer

Real range right there. Homer Simspson, you are a hot shot historian.......

Ah, the ol' 'Cardboard Cruise' fallacy, which is often a misdiagnosis for 'Cut-out Keanu'.

Even all those so-called 'hotshot' roles are knee-deep in classic 'Hero's Journey' storytelling, the staple of so many films, Hollywood in particular.

For your consideration...

Rain Man
Born on the Fourth of July
Jerry Maguire
Magnolia
(another Oscar robbery)

And despite playing a 'hot-shot' he was brilliant in The Color of Money.

Plus a whole bunch of strong performances in everything from Risky Business to Collateral.

And then there's his finest work...

Of the Tom Cruise films of seen in their entirety, I thought his role in Collateral was his most mature (acknowledging I haven't seen a great deal of "Born On The 4th Of July")

I sometimes feel that Leonardo decaprio (sp?) acting ability is similarly underrated

I reckon he's a great actor

I agree that Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt's acting skills can be missed behind their movie star status

In fact I reckon it's their acting combined with their looks that has made them stars. How many good looking actors never go anywhere because they aren't great actors? IMO Brad Pitt was brilliant in the role in Thelma & Louise that kick started his career.
In between signatures .....

Me either. Just reckon he often cops a bad rap. Maybe if he stopped jumping on couches and stuff?

Now for some serious discussion about another maligned actor touring early next year with his stand-up act.

The one, the only, the truly painful...

Jaws

Gets better every time I see it.

Might just be the perfect marriage of art and entertainment.

Robert Shaw's 'Indianopolis' monologue.

Flawless fillum.

Preferred the book but the Indianapolis thing was harrowing. I didn't mind the drunken sing song either ha ha.

Nah way better in Snatch for mine. I suppose I was distracted by how much Juliette Lewis annoys the hell out of me for some reason.

The Blind Side - A serious version of The Waterboy (it even features Kathy Bates!)
Extract - Mike Judge takes a typically lighthearted and whimsical look at suburban life (as he does). Very sentimental.
Hot Tub Time Machine - Enough laughs to ensure there'll be a sequel.
