Universal Pictures have re-released their classic horror films from the 30s.
'Dracula'
'Frankenstein'
'The Mummy'
'Werewolf of London'
'Bride of Frankenstein'
'The Wolf Man'
'Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man'
'Phantom of the Opera'
'House of Frankenstein'
'Creature from the Black Lagoon'

All of them available from JB @ $12.99.
Except for 'The Wolf Man' which is $15.99 (2 disc)
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

great film but this was in the mid 50's, i've seen it at least 150 times & littlebayman loves it as well there is two sequels to it which i have but i haven't had time to watch them yet, i doubt you called call it a horror film though, more a suspense film than a horror film imho

They've just been talking on the radio about another list that's on here http://totalscifionline.com/features/41 ... ror-movies

Their top 10...

10. Jaws :?
9. Halloween
8. Texas Chain Saw Massacre
7. Night of the Living Dead
6. Alien
5. Psycho
4. Bride of Frankenstein
3. The Wicker Man
2. Rosemary's Baby
1. The Shining

I'd question whether or not Jaws and Alien count as horror...admittedly they both have moments that make you jump but is that all it takes to be a horror film :?

Can't understand how Blair Witch gets in at #67...one of the most boring films I've ever sat through.

When Robert Shaw gets chomped on by the shark and when the alien pops out of John Hurt's chest, I would say that that would be a resounding yes!! ;)

That sits proudly in the collection of trashy sci-fi DVDs chez Pseudo, right next to Plan 9 From Outer Space 8)

Plot-wise Invaders From Mars is similar to Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. The latter was more suspense than horror, and is a far superior movie. The '70s remake wasn't bad either.

But then would that mean that films like Saving Private Ryan and Reservoir Dogs would also have to be classed as horror...they're pretty gruesome in places and the opening sequence with people losing limbs or that ear cutting scene are enough to make most people cringe (even though you don't see it cut being cut off) Probably shows how difficult it is to define the various genres and that most films these days cross over into several genres.

The supernatural theme of horror films sets them apart from the very good examples that you mention JAS. But I think there are many soldiers and homicide detectives that will tell you that they've seen plenty of real horror.
So you can draw a real long straw and say that Private Ryan and Reservoir Dogs can be classified in the horror (as well crime, war) genre.

Heads up: The Thing From Another World is on the ABC 2 tonight, 10:15 PM. If I am not mistakes, this was the forerunner to John Carpenter's "The Thing". Never seen it myself, but that will change in a couple of hours time 8)

(edit) oh, and Psycho is on Right Now. Not that I'd call that horror...

I don't think, I know but that aside we're talking about 'horror' as a cinematic genre here and that's not the same as the general dictionary definition of the word...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_film

Even though the article mentions both Jaws and alien I, personally, still don't really consider them horror films in the same way I do with say The Exorcist or Halloween for example.

Re: Horror Movies

Postby Hondo » Sat Oct 31, 2009 10:15 pm

Before thinking about it now I would have called Alien a scary sci-fi film rather than "horror". However, it does have many standard "horror" moments and is set up like a standard horror film. Replace a bunch of "expendable" teenagers in a holiday camp with a bunch of the expendable people on a space-ship. Replace a crazed slasher serial killer with insectoid looking alien picking them off one by one. It's tag-line "in space no-one can hear you scream" is styled like a classic horror movie tag line.

So I'm now thinking it is horror? I have actually never seen Jaws

JAS, maybe the difference between those films and Saving Private Ryan is that SPR is not trying to be scary as such. It has horrific scenes but they are trying to show the reality of the moment rather than trying to make us jump. Alien is a very creepy, scary movie and I found it harder to watch than traditional horror movies like The Exorcist.

I tend to avoid horror films mostly though so haven't seen a lot of the most well known ones. The most effective slasher movie I have seen (in terms of scaring the bejeezus out of me) is Scream.

Tonight on Go (aka channel 9.5) at 11 PM: The Hunger starring Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon and David Bowie. Best Vampire Movie Ever.

Seems to be a bit of a vampire theme on Go at present. Got another one on right after The Hunger, and last week they had Dracula AD 1975 (Campiest Vampire Movie Ever).
