Iconic TV creators

Postby CK » Sun Dec 26, 2010 8:21 pm

Have been a "Rockford Files" fan for many years (thanks, 7 Mate, for repeating them in broadcast order) and noted that it was another Stephen J. Cannell production. Thought I'd seen his name in many shows over the years, but didn't realise just how prodigious his output had been until more of a look.

Among others, he was responsible for The A Team, Greatest American Hero, 21 Jump Street, Santa Barbara, Wiseguy, Adam-12, The Commish, Hardcastle and McCormick and many others.

Reg Grundy was similar in Australia, especially in the game show field, with Sale of The Century, Price is Right , Blankety Blanks, Its a Knockout, Perfect Match, as well as many soaps, such as Sons and Daughters and Prisoner.

Would be interested to hear about others who have been trailblazers with TV over the years.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

Stephen J. Cannell's output is phenomenal. Created something like 40 shows. And wrote 14 novels, too.

The 'created by' credit is a bit iffy in the US. Usually goes to the writer of the pilot ep. But in a case like Paul Attansio and Homicide: Life on the Street it's a bit unjust. Coz he pretty much had nothing to do with the show before or after the pilot.

Some other big TV producer/writer/creators...

Stephen Bochco - Hill Street Blues, LA Law, NYPD Blue.
James L. Brooks - Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant, Taxi, The Simpsons.
David E. Kelly - Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Legal.
Greg Garcia - My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope.
David Simon - The Wire, Generation Kill, Treme.
J. J. Abrams - Felicity, Alias, Lost, Fringe.
Joss Whedon - Buffy, Firefly, Angel,
Larry David - Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Glen A. Larson - Quincy. Buck Rogers, Knight Rider, Magnum.
Chuck Lorre - Roseanne, Grace Under Fire, Dharma & Greg, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory.

One of the biggest showrunners at the moment is an Australian called Shanne Brennan. He runs the NCIS franchise. Got so disillusioned with the Australian industry he had a crack at LA.

Paid off big time for him.

Sherwood Schwartz.

Also did The Brady Bunch...

He was a cop, and good at his job. But then he committed the ultimate sin and testified against other cops - gone bad. Cops who tried to kill him, but got the woman he loved instead. Framed for murder, now he prowls the badlands. An outlaw hunting outlaws, a bounty hunter - a RENEGADE!

Ah yes, thats the one.

Another interesting one is Mel Brooks who's well known in the movie industry, as well as Get Smart. Not sure if he was involved in any other tv programs.
