J Fjeldstad's insulting anti-SANFL tirade in the Sunday Mail

This morning I felt the angriest I ever have felt after reading a newspaper article.
On page 44 of the Sunday Mail, Fjeldstad
ridicules Graham Cornes suggestion that SANFL legends like Peter Carey, Paul Bagshaw and Rick Davies deserve to be in the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Among other infuriating comments, he compares the SANFL to country Leagues and his main evidence that the VFL was far superior appears to be that Glynn Hewitt only played 15 VFL games...
I am preparing a critical, detailed response to email Jesper, but I would be first interested to hear other people's thoughts on this ill-informed, biased piece of journalism that is an insult to anyone who has played in the SANFL.

Ask him why when those legends were playing that SANFL clubs could beat VFL clubs in "national competitions"
And Carey played in some of those games too in 1976....
Listen if the half wit has an idea on how to log onto his computer, can recognise the internet symbol on his deskto, somehow looks onto this website and sees this thread....
Jesper ol son yes we know know the SANFL clubs and the competion on the whole wasn't as good in playing standard as the VFL clubs were. However, when given the oportunity we could compete agaisnt them and sometimes win...i.e we were as good if not better than them occasionally but nore often than not we were brobably 75-90 % as good as them.
So if a bloke could play 450 games of SANFL footy that is as least the equivalent of 300 games of VFL footy.
All Australian guernseys are given for the best players at a national carnival where all players compete on even footing, so if Carey is good enough to be an All Australian twice it is a fair indication that he could play and is deserving of a Hall of Fame membership, certainly his record si far better tha Dittrich's...
All Fjelsted has shown in that article is that he is a half wit when it comes to footy knowledge and history.....

Yes absolute garbage written by that guy. Hes quoting Sheedy saying guys like Ebert weren't a success in the VFL, despite the fact he (Ebert) went over there as a 29 year old, was played out of position, Barassi had a thing against him, and he was flying over for training and games.
Not sure why the Sunday Mail would want this written to a South Australian market. Leave that crap for the Victorian papers.

Bugger off Jesper. Maybe Cornes is qualified to make such comments because he actually saw the guys play rather than judging the players on a 20 second clip on magarey medal night coverage. Jesper is how old? Would have been in nappies when the aforementioned players were in their prime.

I don't even know if Fjeldstad would really believe what he's written. IMO the Sunday Mail has declared that there must be one controversial story in every week. Let's remember it is the Sunday Mail we're talking about though. I wouldn't wipe my *** with it...

Oi!, don't think that John Elliot speak for OR write for all Victorians.

As I understand, Ebert had a good year at North Melbourne, I think Victorians expected him to win the Brownlow or something.
But yes, it certainly was selective writing at its best.

Laughably bad article written by a laughably bad writer. Grammatically, one of the worst to read by a long stretch (Jesper, it actually ISN'T acceptable to start a sentence with a preposition - eg. "and", "but" "or") and regularly shows his preference for controversy over substance. Every paper has one, and unfortunately, Jesper is the Mail's.
Son - head out to an SANFL game one day, bring an army or stand there quietly yourself without fanfare, grab a pie and have a look at it for a while before writing such poorly written, uneducated nonsense. Even better, read a few old SA Yearbooks (Eg Footy Times) and brush up on some knowledge of it.

BTW Tassie, I don't think using SA club victories over VFL clubs at elite levels, ie.End of season
championships,1966 to 1975, or the various night comps,1980 to 1986, will help
your argument. SANFL victories were few and far between.
(I assume that these are competitions you are referring to?)
This Frida Lyngstad idiot deserves to be ignored.
I won't buy the Sunday Mail tomorrow(that's probably what they want you to do!),
but read it for
free at the State Library.

There's some shocking journos going around at the minute, don't get me wrong, there's also some good ones but I could put together a dozen guys from this and other websites that could do a much better job than some of the clowns that do it for a living.
I wont even get started with what I could do with a camera with a 10k lens!

My point I'm trying to make is that yes we weren't as good but we weren't that far behind that occasionally we would and could beat them.
Yes they were better but not that much better that our legends at state league level - the same as the VFL/AFL pre 1990 shopuld be pre-cluded from the
Australian Football Hall of fame.
In other words our players have to do more (achievements, games played and awards) than what the VFL did but in the case of Supe, Bagshaw and others (especially Tom Leahy as LL pointed out) they deserve to be in.
Getting back to the ABBA fan, I thin CC has a point in that the article could well be written to be "Controversial" and to get us to waste precious kB, howeevr if it should be just a VFL players how the hell did Frank Johnson get a gig this year only playing 64 VFL games...

634 should be enough.

Sorry Tassie, couldn't resist.

Jesper's got about as much cred as Rebecca Wilson does, ie none.
Unfortunately its not too far down the track when there wont be any more newspapers, just daily versions of New Idea and Woman's Weekly. Actually its probably the case now, the only news I got from the last 2 papers was how many times Nicole Cornes' dress has been worn. Cheap skank, buy a new one!

PS The most ironic thing about the article is the first line
Jesper Fjeldstad wrote:Another batch of Australian Football Hall of Fame inductees, another batch of botched arguments.
The most "botched" argument that has been presented is quite possibly his!

If you want news, buy The Australian. If you want (semi) sensible SANFL info, stick with SA Footy.net!
