I believe the SANFL has one. If so, what are the mechanics involved.

I believe 1 game of league footy is all that is required. Not sure about coaching or any other official roles.

One game  ...what if someone played for several clubs?

The son has a choice to make.

I've often wondered about the requirements of this, seems some loopholes exist, for example:

Young Michael, who's father played for North is a Rooster fan but lives in the Port Adelaide Zone ... Could North then register Michael's father, name him in the league side and leave him on the bench for one match, thus qualifying Michael for Father/Son eligibility?

But if Michael's Dad has already played for North, why would they need to name him in the league side now?

LOL Oh yeah  Sorry, I meant if Michal's dad was a longtime North fan and brought his son up that way, what then? Ie, if Wedgie's lads are in the South zone, could the Roosters name Wedgie for the 1 game then claim his sons under F/S?

That's a big hypothetical CP! I can't see a league team sacrificing a spot in the team on the off-chance the kid turns out to be as good as they hope. But yes, they could do that if they wanted.

Yeah I know mate, I can't imagine we'd ever see it ... BUT, if a team were languishing and the kid was an AFL monty, intersting at how easy it would be to buck the system and earn $50k effectively from 1 game.

It is an interesting loophole - one I hope never gets exploited. It would be a sad day for our comp I reckon.

im pretty sure if that was the case North could just pay a transfer fee to Port.

Don't worry this loophole has been thought of and contemplated - don't forget though the dad would still have to be a registered player on an SANFL list to play and all listings have to be approved by the SANFL. I am sure they would veto it when they see that the dad is 38 yo - or at least smell a rat and question it (mind you it is the SANFL).

Just expanding, it is not uncommon for a father to have played for several league clubs and his son legally resides in a separate zone to any of the clubs that his father has played for. When this happens the player chooses which ever of these he wants to play for but once decided he is signed and then bound to that club.

I'll stand corrected but sons of life members are also eligible for the father and son rule too. I remember some Glenelg officials going on about it wanting to ensure their sons could play for Glenelg if they were good enough.

10 years voluntary service minimum required for life membership at Glenelg for an official, but I'm not aware of anyone getting life membership for less than 15 years service in a non-playing capacity.

Where can you find a list to see if the father played a league game,
Hate to find out if he did......My boy is happy where he is...

Incorrect Tassie, I don't know where you got that from. Non-playing club service, no matter how long, has absolutely no correlation to playing at least one league game. Apart from residential qualifiaction or paying $5k prior to registration (or swapping players), playing one league game or more is the only way you can be signed by a club prior to the year that you turn 20yo.

I thought it may be wrong, only heard it from club volunteers so I wasn't 100 confident. Thanks for clearing that up for me...

Probably best known example of this I can think of is Tim Nunan, whose father Mick was involved with North/Sturt.

I've got another conundrum for you. I'm friends with a family who are North Adelaide supporters and attend almost every match, they live in the Sturt area and the father played several games for Woodville and then Woodville/West Torrens when they amalgamated. Judging by what your saying his kids only have the option of playing for Sturt (residential rule) or the Eagles (Father/Son rule) even though they are North Adelaide Supporters, am I right?

From what I understand it was difficult for the father back then as well as he grew up a North Supporter and lived most of his childhood in Nailsworth, but because his mother lived in Woodville he was tied to Woodville Footy Club.

I'll defer to ML but yep you are right unless they want to fok out cash a la the Fosdikes did with (Nick) a nephew of Duncan when he was residentially zoned to glenelg....

If a father is on a club list on the SA footy forum as playing for a club, even though I was sure he only played reserves.
Does that mean if things don't work out where the kid is now, they can change with no cost involved to the father club before they turn 20.

Could someone please explain as it might be a good option if the kid doesn't get a good go in the future at the present club..
