At my cricket club last night we had our 40th year anniversary dinner and thanks to Glen Elliot we had Barrie Robran as our guest speaker.

I must say is the first time Ive heard him speak live and he is not only a true legend of Australian Footballl but an icon of this state. The bloke is so humble and has never forgotten where he came from.

He stated his career highlight was playing his first game with North Adelaide, not the medals and premierships, just fullfilling his goal of playing with North, even his second highlight was simply playing with his brother.

He enjoys SANFL much much more than AFL, in fact walking out of a AFL game last year at half time..

He said the best player he has ever seen is Stephen Kernahan although he believes Judd in time will pass him.

He named the magnificent 7 of SANFL footy including Ebert, Bagshaw, Marker, Cornes, Davies, Kerley and I forget the other...

He didnt make a fee from attending but auctioned some items for his charity which there were some great bids so made it worthwhile.

Also interesting side note that NAFC have commited to sponsoring our cricket club next year, just hope I dont have to wear a top with NAFC on it!!!! (we are the same colours as North)...interesting concept, they cant be involved in our footy club as its in Sturt's zone!

Many North fans will know all of the above but thought it was worth sharing...

The bloke is an impeccable judge of footballers

I think Fred Bills might be the other player mind you I think he (Barrie) slots in there some where.

I did a state game as a trainer years ago and he was by far the most approachable and down to earth state official, considering what he had done footy. The less said about a current senior crows official and his attitude towards the plebs despite his contribution to footy paleing into insignificance alongside robrans was mind-boggling.

I've said it before and I'll say it again in the dictionary alongside the word class is a picture of Barrie Robran

Good to see Marker get a mention. IMHO, a grossly under-rated superstar of SANFL football.

Wedgie will be rapt that Stephen Kerley got a mention!

If only G Cornes was 1/5th as humble as Barrie, I wouldn't rate Cornes as the biggest full of himself knob ever...

Yeah he mentioned Marker a few times during the night.

I forgot that he also spoke about his state cricketing career something I never knew.

He played for a successful Prospect in the late 60s/early 70s firstly as a medium pacer and then as an opening batsman. Very handy player who also opened the batting for SA with medium success.

If he wanted to be, Barrie would have been a great basketballer as well. I know, I used to play on him :)

Spot on there Dutchy. As a North member previously living in the country, Barrie would respond to emails personally in his marketing role with the club and encouraged me to catch up with him when at a game. I did that and didn't have to remind him of who I was, we had a chat and he then presented me with a gift signed by Jars!! (although signed by Barrie himself would've been better). Amazing generosity by an amazing guy. His personality matches his talent as a footballer.

Course John 'Sammy' Newman's a good bloke to Graham 'Polly' Farmer.
He was the Geelong legend's successor in ruck!
From people I know who've met Sam Newman...
They say he IS the same arrogant egomaniacal tossa he is on the telly!
Specially towards the ladies!
Do you think that plumber decked him or his girlfriend run him over coz he's a stand-up sort of fella? :?

Good point ST. Just because these blokes are in the media, it doesn't give them the right to carry on like knob jockeys. Good blokes are good blokes all the time, not just when it suits them. Can you imagine Barrie Robran carrying on like a tosser just because he has a role to play in the media?

Apart from 3 days CB for having dirty boots on parade in the green machine, (I was framed - fact) playing juniors at North Whyalla was my only time behind prison bars.

Had a chat with Barrie and....
I asked Barrie how many kicks he would get standing JUDD or COUSINS.
He replied about 10 kicks
I asked him only 10
He said, Mal the reason I would only get 10 kicks on those guys
is because Im nearly 60years old !!!

Yep the best footballer Ive seen in the SANFL
And he always says hullo to me at Prospect Oval in that souvenier shed.
He is a very kind gentleman
He was impeccable when on those channel 9 footy shows.

Only 2 things have tarnished him
That knee injury courtesy of Leigh Matthews
And he says Shane Watson is not a good cricketer.

He did buy Rosie a southern comfort and coke when we were at the Pier one night, perhaps just to shut her up.
