That would be a big call. Although North struggling and maybe Surjan isn't the right man, not sure Mayes is ready to be a full time sanfl coach yet

In pursuit of maintaining a competitive edge in 2025, the Board of Directors has made the decision to part ways with Senior Coach Jacob Surjan, effective immediately.

Jacob’s contract is set to conclude at the end of the season, and the Board remains committed to shaping a strong future for the club. While this transition comes earlier than anticipated, we believe it positions the team to maximise its potential in 2025.

We recognise Jacob's invaluable contributions to the club, both since his appointment in 2020 and earlier as the club’s Development Coach under Josh Carr from 2017 to 2019. His role was instrumental in the 2018 premiership. Additionally, his leadership played a key part in the club’s two Grand Final appearances in 2020 and 2022, as well as in guiding players and coaches who have progressed to the AFL, senior coaching roles in the SANFL, and other competitions.

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Jacob’s family – his wife Alison and their children – who have been deeply embedded in the club’s journey. Their unwavering support has been essential in making his contributions possible.

Sam Mayes, with a strong background in player development and coaching, will step in as interim Senior Coach. His deep understanding of our team as Head of Development and Assistant Coach, together with Sam’s experience as a player in the AFL and SANFL, equips him well to guide us through this transition.

The Board will, in due course, commence the search for a permanent Senior Coach for the 2026 season and beyond and will provide further updates.

In the meantime, we urge everyone to rally behind Sam, the coaching group, and the team as we move forward. We deeply appreciate your unwavering support, passion, and dedication to our club.

Together, we will navigate this transition and strive for success.

Yours sincerely,
Kris Mooney

He should have gone at the end of last season. Players were not happy. Results were terrible. Now this year is wasted. The loss to West was the final nail in the coffin. The right call in the end though, happy players will now see marked improvement I predict.

Agree. Where is the value in bringing him in if he's getting sacked at SANFL level this early into a season.
