SANFL has today announced a new-look, 38-player West End State Squad to confront the WAFL in Perth on Sunday, May 15.

With the first training session under coach Jade Sheedy set to kick off at Thebarton Oval tonight, the initial list of those poised to tackle the WAFL at Optus Stadium has been finalised.

2021 Grand Finalist Glenelg has seven players named, as does last year's qualifying finalist Norwood, with six potential Redlegs debutants such as ruckman Harry Boyd, forward Ben Jarvis and midfielders Jacob Kennerly and Nik Rokahr.

Sheedy's reigning Eagles premiership squad will supply six players, including star midfielders Riley Knight and Joseph Sinor, livewire forward Daniel Menzel and former Brisbane Lions giant Connor Ballenden.

North Adelaide has five players chosen, Sturt and South Adelaide four each and Central District three while AFL-experienced key position pair Tom Keough and Kaiden Brand represent West Adelaide.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, Sheedy said selectors - headed by Chairman Stephen Rowe - had opted for a larger squad this year due to so many players being in strong form.

North Adelaide coach Jacob Surjan will continue as one of Sheedy's assistants, while Norwood mentor Jade Rawlings and West Adelaide senior assistant Adam Hartlett have joined this year's West End State coaching panel as it seeks to retain the Haydn Bunton Junior Cup.

The initial West End State squad will be trimmed to 23 players after Round 6 of the Hostplus SANFL League, ahead of the final two training sessions in the week leading up to the clash.

A new State captain will be named in the final week, with last year's skipper Jack Hayes now on St Kilda's list.

Listen on the SANFL website here for Zac Milbank’s full interview with Jade Sheedy on the State Squad selection.

I fear we will lose McCormack in the mid-season draft.

Don’t have to be dead to be stiff Matty Snook, 2nd best inside mid in the comp after Campbell Coombe. Should be in the final 22.

S-N-O-O-K, selectors that’s how you spell his name.
We’re not really being serious here, are we?

Just put all the Glenelg players in, double bonus of being assured of an easy win and it'll stop the Glenelg supporters whinging.
I'd be stoked if no North players were selected personally.

If Rowey's chairman of selectors, then probably not, no.

If this game was being kept at any lower key, it would be somewhere in the sub-contra octave.

Has there been any further news besides the initial squad? Is the game going to be viewable on free-to-air somewhere, or even a free stream? Is there a pub somewhere that has plans to screen it? Does anyone give two hoots?

The 2022 West End State team has been finalised ahead of Sunday’s battle for the Haydn Bunton Junior Cup against the WAFL in Perth.

Selectors, headed by Chairman Stephen Rowe, have settled on 23 players to tackle the Sandgropers at Optus Stadium in a curtain-raiser to the West Coast v Melbourne AFL match.

Midfielders Luke Partington (head knock) and Patrick Wilson (shoulder) have been ruled out with injury after Round 6 in the Hostplus SANFL League, as has experienced defender Max Proud, who suffered a heavy knock which limited his movement against North Adelaide.

West Adelaide’s Josh Carmichael has been rewarded for his excellent form this season, the Merbein recruit has been averaging 24 disposals at 83 per cent efficiency while also hitting the scoreboard with seven goals.

The 22-year-old will be joined in the midfield rotation by Norwood captain Matthew Nunn, South Adelaide ball magnet Mitch O’Neill and North Adelaide Magarey Medallist Campbell Combe.

Rooster Harrison Wigg is coming off a 45-disposal performance against Glenelg on Sunday while Tiger Matt Allen and Panther Hayden Sampson loom as the Croweaters’ wingmen.

Eagles giant Connor Ballenden and strongly-built Norwood ruck Harry Boyd will share the ruck duties while also spending time in attack.

Triple Ken Farmer Medallist Liam McBean will lead the way inside SA’s 50m arc while being surrounded by star Eagle Daniel Menzel and clever goalsneaks Jye Menzie and Zane Williams.

AFL-experienced pair Kaiden Brand and Sam Durdin loom as key pillars in the back half for West End State coach Jade Sheedy, who will be looking to repeat last year’s exceptional 53-point win at Adelaide Oval.

Since doing battle since 1904, SA and WA have both won 48 matches with the Croweaters aiming for three wins in a row after also claiming honours in Perth in 2019.

The SA v WA game starts at 1:30pm ACST (12pm WA time) on Sunday and will be broadcast on radio SEN SA.

I would certainly have given two hoots and been interested in viewing on TV or stream, had they not degraded the match by playing it as a curtain-raiser to the VFL.

Best keep Jade Rawlings away from the game plan if they want to kick 10 goals or more

Another coach who thinks you need 20 kicks to get from one end of Norwood Oval to the other
