Big-bodied Port Adelaide midfielder Louis Sharrad has edged out team-mate Tom Gray to win the 2017 Reserves Magarey Medal.

Sharrad, who finished with a total of 20 votes, managed to hold off fellow on-baller Gray – the younger brother of the Power’s Sam Gray – on 17 votes.

The Magpies’ pair finished well clear of Norwood’s Stefan Giro and West Adelaide’s Oliver Johnson, who were equal third with 11 votes each.

Measuring in at a sizeable 188cm and 84kg, Sharrad used his frame to advantage while attracting three first preferences, five second preferences and one third preference in his 12 appearances at Reserves level in 2017.

The 24-year-old has also played five Macca’s League matches this season, including last Saturday’s Qualifying Final win against Sturt at the Adelaide Oval.

Originally from the Flinders Park Football Club, Sharrad is the first Magpies player to win the Reserves Magarey Medal since Daniel Batson and Terry Milera went back-to-back in 2009 and 2010.

Both of the Port players would walk in to any other League side.
Bit of a joke really....

Absolutely they would and hopefully next year they will get the opportunity to continue their SANFL career elsewhere next season.

Before that hopefully the can win this week and progress into a grand final and then win a premiership. It would be a great way for my brother and his mates to cap off their time at the Magpies.

Some very dedicated boys deserve some reward for hanging tough when the easy (?) option would have been to leave.

I sure hope they do get it.

Wouldn't call it the easy option to leave, quite the opposite for some but it had/has to be done to further their footy. The boys still there are still there because all bullshit aside, it's their club. They've come up through the ranks and have a huge emotional connection with the club so for them winning a flag together would be huge before going their separate ways.

That's exactly why I had the (?) after the "easy option" part.

They'd do more than just walk in........ I reckon Sharrad would be in the top half dozen players as well at that club.

Sammy's 10 votes from just 5 Ressie games. The only game he didn't poll in he still managed a game-high 30 possessions. Clearly has ability.
Once he fully copes with the increased intensity of league football he might well become a top-echelon player at the Dogs.
