Rule Change

Not sure if it has been raised on here but I don't mind this.

A rule that has been used during the national under 18 and under 16 championships over the past two seasons’ should be enacted in SANFL underage football.

To open the game up, at all stoppages each team must have two players in their forward 50 metre arc and a minimum of another three members of the team in the front half of the ground.

It has proved successful at the very elite underage level and would improve the SANFL game locally.

It's from http://indaily.com.au/sport/2015/08/12/ ... und-up-15/ , a good read . Probably the best local footy publication out there Id say.

The TAC Cup competition has had that since last year, but as I understand it, it's not actually a 'rule' but a gesture of goodwill between the coaches.

Strikes me as odd that the biggest stage for AFL hopefuls has them playing by different rules than the competition they're aspiring to join.

Anyway, that's not the point .. Would be nice to see the game open up and move further away from the congestion of modern footy

I guess if they had a linesman type of referee, to watch out for such infringements at either end of the ground and maybe a flag system (just like soccer) the rule could be workable.
I guess a free kick would be paid, at either the place of infringement or where the ball is, whichever is to that team's advantage.
Imagine streaming into an open goal then suddenly the whistle sounds because there aren't the required number of players back?

I see what you are saying but I think its only at stoppages that its paid.. So essentially it wouldn't get to the point where the ball is in play before any potential free is paid.. It would be paid as soon as the ball is thrown in the air

I like the idea, let the boundary umpires have control. The AFL have 4 already so wont be a problem there, would be harder to adjudicate with only 2 in the u/18s and Ressies etc though

I get it now. Thanks Torps, I skimmed over the bit where it mentioned "stoppages".
I guess it would then depend on the side's ability to get players back/forward in time before the umpire recommences play. I reckon coaches might just decide it's easier just to keep players close by or permanently zoned.
I reckon it's worth trialling. I am a little against this soccer/netball style of offside/zoning so it'd depend on how great the benefits prove to be.

would be the responsibility of a field umpire to check......there are 3 of them ideally located in each third of the ground

Im not against the idea, but having said that im a firm believer that structures and style are forever changing, and im wary of changing rules on the run to try and suit.. If we ride it out it will (hopefully) eventually turn..

I do like the idea of having forward being restricted to the forward 50 essentially, I think it will also be welcomed by power forwards like Wundks.. Not sure how much big boy enjoys having to push past the centre all the time! ;)

How about if it's the responsibility of either field or boundary umpires? At the moment boundary umpires are responsible for centre square infringements at the ball ups. It's the same sort of thing. If the ball is being hurled back in after being out of bounds the field umpire might be better placed.
I like the idea of the boundary umpires being able to advise the field umpires in case they've missed something blatant.

Use high power electric fences instead of white lines for the 50 metre lines. Problem solved.
