Rd 15 - Eagles v Adelaide, Sun Aug 3 @ MTH Oval, Woodville

Postby PhilH » Tue Jul 29, 2014 9:35 pm

A big day on & off the field for the Eagles.

WWT still looking for 1st victory v AFL reserves side and with poor percentage need to keep a win ahead of the Redlegs in the race for the top 3.

If Crows want to play finals they need to win all 4 final games.

Off field it's the start of Eagles Community Week, a huge day starting with 26 junior teams playing in the first ever MWJFL Lightning Carnival and continuing with a Life FM Outside Broadcast and other Community Activities.

Great initiative Phil, if it as successful as the Eagles Zone SASFA Lightning Carnival, it will be a winner!

Crows have close to a full strength list and a much better side than we played last time where we gave a typically gutless performance when the going got tough.

Wundke will find it difficult to kick a goal with Rutten on him and little supply given the dreadful form of our midfielders. Furthermore Wundke will not be able to push away Rutten like he does to the other defenders.

I've lost faith in Ainger as a key forward and (apart from McGregor earlier in the season) our small forwards/midfielders generally don't have an impact on the scoreboard.

I'd really like to see Godden swing the axe here and bring in a number of untried players from the reserves to see if they have what it takes. The current crop are comletely disinterested at the moment.

The Eagles will be doing well if we kick over 8 goals for the match. Not enough I'm afraid.

Expect Crows to win by about 6 goals with the margin consolidated by early in the second quarter.

Good luck PhilH and everyone at the Eagles. Hope you guys can match the over 4k crowd you got against Port earlier in the year! Weather certainly looks like it is going to play nice on Sunday!

On the game itself, I'm finding it hard to pick a winner! Certainly the Eagles form is less than inspiring at the moment. The Crows form was good up until last weekend. Without wanting to take away from Port, I actually felt that was a really ordinary performance from the Crows.

The Eagles have been going missing too often for a quarter or half of Football, and for this reason, I'm picking Adelaide, but not confidently.
No Surrender!

I don't care how they do it and who it is against, the Eagles just have to win! Just do the simple things - loud voice, stick the tackles, attack the ball, run hard. Eagles probably have to win 3 out of 4 to finish top 3 - possibly all 4 - so a must win game.

I get the feeling Rutten will go back to the Crows AFL side to stand one of the Eagles big forwards.. Thompson struggled a bit on Sunday so he will likely come back and play on either Ainger or Wundke.. And with Hartigan out, that makes the Crows defence look a little light, so if the Eagles can, heavan forbid, move the ball quickly through the corridor they might be able to expose that and kick a winning score.. If they play the slow reactive footy they have been of late, the Crows will chop them..

Joe Sinor must be reincluded in the league team. Sensational game against the Dogs reserves. Most probably the most talented of our younger brigade and must be persevered with. A couple of other SANFL clubs are looking at him.

Clearly he is carving it up in the reserves. I realise it can take some time before a young, inexperienced player becomes confident at league level and establishes themselves but the guys that do usually have some x-factor about them. Granted, I've only seen him play his 1-2 games in the league team but he got a fair in both games and just didn't appear to have any weapon to his game. Not fast for a midfielder, not an outstandig kick, not that fierce at the ball.

At the moment we've got too many blokes treading water between reserves in league. They have outstanding reserves matches, get elevated for a few games then get dropped because they are not up to it. The cycle goes on and on. Into this list I'd put Sinor, Martyn, Poole, Schwarz and to a lesser extent, Appleton. I reckon Godden needs to make up his mind to either persist with one or all of them for a bit in the league to really see what they can do or else send them on their way. At the moment the team is just going round in circles.

Sinor is a player, just cant see how he fits into a side containing Powell and Lewis.. Having said that, he is the obvious choice to step up when Powelly decides its time.. I liek Appleton, he has pace, something no other Eagles mid can attest to having.. Boyd back in, Good news for one of the Crows mids who wont have an opponent near him all day. If that happens to be Matt Crouch then he could notch up 40 with relative ease..

Genuinely cannot pick a winner here with any confidence

F: Poole, Wundke, Grocke
HF: Goldsworthy, Ainger, McGregor

That is a scary forward line. Or at least it should be and is capable of kicking 15+ goals every week no matter who the opposition is.
Assuming the midfield actually get the ball to them.

Not sure how they are playing but with a forward line up with that much firepower you'd think the game plan would be long, fast and direct.
