2013 SANFL RESERVES GRAND FINAL - Eagles vs Glenelg

Thougt I'd start a thread for this blockbuster.
Last time these 2 met in a Grand Final was in 2009, where Glenelg came from 41 points behind early in the 3rd quarter to win.
Mick Goddens last game as Reserves Coach at Glenelg.
Glenelg has won recent Reserves premierships in 2007, 2009 and 2011 - so I guess it makes sense that they win this year.

Difference is, we are in the Granny, they weren't, so our chances of winning are significantly better.

BTW, probably one for the SANFL History thread, but noticed today that on PF day that the 6 senior teams still alive (3 league, 3 reserves) all came from different clubs. Probably be the first time in a while that that's happened. Even though it may not speak to the evenness of the (league) competition, it does indicate that most clubs have some decent depth in their squads.
Very impressively even reserves finals series too (to go with an almost-too-even minor round), with margins being 3, 32, 5, 8 & 10 points in the 5 matches played.

The two teams have played each other on 2 occasions in the regular season, the Eagles winning comfortably both times. The Eagles deserve this one so much. Having clearly been the best side all year, finishing on top of the ladder by 5 games. That doesn't mean much on Grand Final day though.
Rnd 8 - Eagles 19.10.124 def Glenelg 6.4.40
Rnd 17 - Glenelg 4.6.30 def by Eagles 15.11.101

Just out of interest, what is the rule regards qualification to play in this game.

I wouldn't think Parry qualifies.

One of the most elusive documents at the SANFL with many contradictory decisions over the years!
Are any of the Eagles players who played League in the 1st Semi Final available to play?

Apparently not!
The rule really is stuffed. Guys like Carey (played all year in Reserves but played 1st Semi League) and Martyn (played 3 league games) are two who are being refused the opportunity to go back to Reserves. But someone like Byron Sumner who played all year in League, goes to Reserves for one game is allowed to play. How is that fair, no common sense!
Every year the same crap decisions are made!

Exactly the same thing happened to Josh Waldhuter from Central the year before last...

IMHO the rule should be if you played more reserves than league games, you qualify. No matter what part of the season you played them.

von Bertouch would be another. Played probably 5 games towards end of season, and got dropped for the QF before playing 1st semi.
Guess it happens to every club each year, but they are three blokes who have pretty much been reserves players this year.

Another well known (at Glenelg anyway) example is Lachie McGregor playing his first League game in 2009 in the Preliminary Final (had 5 possessions) but not being eligible for the Reserves Grand Final the following week.
The biggest issue is that eligibility for Reserves finals depends on when your League team is knocked out. This year, E Gill, Gamble, Carger and Milne played League for Glenelg in Glenelg's last League game (round 23) but WERE eligible to play in the reserves final the following week.
But guys like McGregor and those Eagles blokes also played the last League game for their club but WEREN'T eligible to play in the reserves finals the following week, just because that League game was a final!

Doesn't feel like any club would in this day and age, but the rule encourages stacking, rather than discourages it.
Spargo's thought is the simplest and probably best given they can't come up with a suitable alternative.
The Eagles obviously also stand to benefit from playing Sumner, which as Willo pointed out is just as much of a injustice as the three lads missing out.

Would have thought if your first team is out you would have to name it regardless to select your 2nd team.

PhilH or BigPhil - are Life or RPH calling the Reserves game on radio? I remember it being done a few years ago.

Yep, exactly. Unlucky for the individuals but the Reserves should be the 2nd 21, not just a heap of people you could pick because they played x number of games.

No, mate, neither RPH or LifeFM are calling the Reserves Grand Final (I remember calling the last quarter on LifeFM back in 2009)...
But, as was the case last year, myself and Don Cooper will be calling the game for the SANFL web site's LIVE streaming of the game...
PhilH and John Nankivell, as per 2012, will be calling all the action in the Under 18's Maccas Cup Grand Final as well, from 9:05pm...

Well, as you are closer to the team than most, if you want to clarify any pronounciations they may have trouble with, I can pass them on the boys to make sure that they get them right this year...
