Should there be an SANFL Easter Monday match?

Postby PhilH » Mon Apr 01, 2013 6:07 pm

Not great for the players but we have games on the Queens Birthday & Adelaide Cup Day (when it was in May).

Would it be a good time slot for fans?

Yes. Too good an opportunity to pass up. Could have a full round of games on Thurs night, a full round on Monday and then one this weekend. 3 rounds for the price of 2.

We used to have them all the time.

The first one that was played that I can see in my history books was 1969 between Sturt & North Adelaide

The Blues came from behind in the second 1/4 from memory to win 15.15 (105) to 10.18 (78).

They were played every year after that when Easter fell in April. Not sure when they finished.

Probably after the Crows came in.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

it's a good idea ... just need to keep the next round in mind so that any competing teams are not disadvantaged

Not at the expense of two games on a Thursday night, the Good Friday game and a game on Saturday afternoon. Reckon they got it right this round.

This game had two night games on Thurs night, a twilight game on Good Friday and an ABC game on Saturday arvo.
You'd think one of the night games on Thurs night would have to move to a day game on the Monday. This would also make the Monday teams conscious of playing no earlier than Saturday the next week. At this time of the year all the clubs seem to want night games so a Monday night game would be a challenge and then it would likely mean a Sunday game for both clubs the following week.

I'm a bit surprised West v Central could only get 3,000 or so apparently, for a Round 1 night game at Richmond? Disappointing.

Why? West have poor support and Centrals supporters travel poorly. Just have a look at the recent
North v Centrals games at Prospect - closest ground to them and we get poor crowds when they visit. Winning year after year since 2000 hasn't helped either in my opinion - they skip the minor round then come out in force in finals!

Pretty sure you'll find Centrals have fans like no other club in any sporting competition around the entire globe when it comes to loyalty, passion and general fervor OTR.

That's what they think anyway. :D

South have done well to make Good Friday their own and promote it and do well out of it, Easter Monday might be a good opportunity for another SANFL side to do the same if a club specifically would like that timeslot?

Agreed that having the two matches on Thursday night was not the greatest idea the SANFL has come up with as there are plenty of people that would like to go to or listen to both games on the radio. A wider footprint of matches gives the SANFL more capacity to promote and grow the game.

Yes, I'd have been more likely to be able to get to an Easter Monday game than one on Thursday night, or earlier on the Easter Weekend.

I had been intending to go to the Norwood vs Port match on Thursday evening, but things I was doing the other side of town during the day - helping a friend do up a kitchen - took longer than expected, and I didn't have to turn around time to go home and change then drive down again. (Plus I was tired and my muscles were aching.)
