Footy feud: Elite schools v SANFL

LONG-STANDING tensions between SANFL clubs and Adelaide's leading private schools are reaching boiling point because of the rising number of footballers being recruited into the college system.

Give students a fighting chance

Some colleges have become increasingly results-driven since the introduction of a premiership table two years ago and are now openly targeting players and coaches to boost their programs.

More and more of the state's best young juniors are being offered free educations because of the perceived link between on-field performance and enrolments.

SANFL talent manager Brenton Phillips, who is responsible for preparing SA's elite footballers for AFL careers, says this is affecting the amount of time they are able to spend at their SANFL clubs and stifling their development.

"The colleges now are offering a lot more scholarships," Phillips said.

"It's fantastic for their education, there's no doubt about that. I'm not sure about their football."

A Sunday Mail investigation into the college football system has found:

Yeah colleges don't hand out scholarships to footballers just like old collegians don't pay in the SAAFL

the word B*LLSH!T comes to mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!

College football should be played mid week only and they should be made to tow the line or is the SANFL who are supposed to govern football that weak to tell them. O' hang on its run by the college xxxx and we all know who they are!!!

How is removing government cash going to help the SANFL?

If they have got enough money to waste on scholarships and sports programs they obviously dont need government assistance
Absolutely had a gutfull of colleges, they are destroying our local league here aswell, our footy club loses dozens of kids each year to rubbish standard college footy.
We now have u10 kids who play on friday nights now being told they can no longer play for us because they have to play college football on the weekend.

Have no problem with a kid getting free education but play the freaking games mid week ffs ! Does not take much brain power to work that one out surely.
All clubs hate how the colleges steal their players so stamp it out now.

Jim,

Colleges in Primary School have always had first call on students - This isn't new to club footy - I use to play both school and club footy at St Michael's and many students I teach there still do.
Most colleges I can vouch for in their enrolment days make it clear that college sport comes first but there are some outs:

If you play ie) Soccer for School, you can play footy for club
You can play a sport the school doesn't offer without having to represent the school.
Kids who play college teams build really good school classroom relationships sharing in a common sporting team -- think most people on here argue the yr 10 - yr 12 aged boys.

I would love to see Wednesday afternoons set aside for compulsory school sport State and College - Districts could play football in the afternoon. Ie College v State School, College v College, State School v State school in round robins. Good for obesity, good for peer relations and good for inter-school relations public ad private. BUT we have governments that talk about this and that and when it comes to real decisions, they are like K-Rudd > Not willing to put up their hand and be counted

Some SANFL Clubs are in this from the other way around. Supposedly NAFC has (if not now then previously) paid tuition fees and boarding costs for some country kids to attend elite private schools in the city.

Hmm what about Norwood and their Boarding House set up in the 70's and 80's! You don't think Norwood was not paying tuition etc. on top of housing them?

People know that when they enroll in a private school that the school sport takes priority. If they don't like it, don't go there..

I don't know what was happening then. I'm guessing you are referring to Carmel Court but I don't recall the likes of John Wynne and co attending private schools in their twenties.

I only mentioned NAFC because it was told to me on very good authority by someone with a close connection to a particular school, (not a club affiliation).

That also may have had something to do with a certain U18's coach and his, ummm, let me say, tendencies ... 8-[

Phil Carman lived there, I'm pretty certain. I know another bloke, 'Grub' Madden lived there and, IIRC, Neil Craig was there at around that time. Madden and Craig played in a junior premiership together - they had a reunion at the Robin Hood Hotel last year. Not sure if they went to schools but they were close to school age at the time.
