The Sliding Rule

Having watched last night's AFL game and a little bit of tonight - my question is - are the SANFL going to bring in the sliding rule as well?

I really hope they don't. It will completely screw footy at this level up.

If the SANFL have any desire to be independent of the AFL, they should not bring in this rule, and if they have already, they should get rid of it before Round 1. It is against the fabric of the game.

Yep just to make sub-standard umpiring even worse and more confusing.

Not sure. Have not taken any notice of pre-season at either AFL or SANFL this year and was gobsmacked when I saw it last night. There will be a lot of yelling at the umpires in the first few rounds and it won't be their fault!

I saw a shocker last week in the Port / North trial and a couple today that were paid and not paid. I have read on this forum and other forums were they were paid in other trials to date.

Firstly why would the sanfl want to be independent to the AFL? If they went independent then the comp will die, The AFL is the next step up from the SANFL so you want to keep it as close as to the AFL as you can.

Aerie tell me when ever have you seen a training drill where you slide in to pick up the footy, never it's not taught and it never will be. Tell me though when have you ever seen a training drill or warmup where the player needs to bend over and pick up the ball? Pretty much every training and warmup in every football competition. I personally think it's a great rule, it means the player has to pick the ball up and hit the contest, instead of sliding in and someone jumping on top and locking the ball in. it's funny how we have played the whole nab cup with this rule and one crows player gets done in a loss and crows fans kick up in arms about it.

There were a couple if these decisions paid last Saturday night at City Mazda Stadium.

See this thread for ALL the rule changes for 2013, including the sliding one.

Training is very different to a game situation. Nothing should stop a player going in to win the ball. There is already the holding the ball rule in place if the play is held up with a player diving on it. There has always been an admiration for that player who "is at the bottom of the pack" winning the ball and feeding it out to team mates. Luke Powell comes immediately to mind. I can already see this rule is going to frustrate the bejesus out of me.

I must be the only one who thinks the rule might turn out to be a good one. Watching the AFL game tonight, there seemed to be a lot less stoppages. That can only be a good thing.

I hope it does turnout good, I just think the game is slowly heading down the path of discouraging people to be first to the ball. Almost like taking benefit of the doubt away from the batsmen.

The one interpretation that really bugs me at the moment is that unless you literally rugby league pass the football dropping/throwing the ball is part of the game now. The umpires are so focused on the there being less ball ups that it doesn't matter how u dispose of it as long as it gets out

Apparently, umpires are being stricter on this rule this season.

Good to see! It was becoming a joke last season imho. Hopefully common sense prevails.

Will be interesting to see how this rule affects games once we are in the middle of winter playing on mud heaps. (Something the AFL wouldn't have had to take into account)

Imho it will have a huge influence just not sure if it will be a positive or a negative

Disappointing that the AFL's sanitization of the game is again going to be replicated by the SANFL. I think most of us like to see players dive in for the ball à la Luke Powell and are tired of seeing the first player to the ball penalized. If this rule change is about protecting footballers' legs from injury, it seems superfluous as there are already enough rules to cover serious contact. And obviously the holding the ball rule is there to penalize players for diving on the ball and not attempting to get rid of it.

Not opposed to penalising players for deliberately sliding under the legs of a player like Riley did to Davey. Can easily break a leg.
If going directly at and for the ball that is different. Of course the umpires will bugger it up not knowing the difference because 90% of them have never played a game.
