SANFL Club profits

Postby darley16 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 3:48 pm

In these times of financial hardship for all things particularly hospitality/sporting clubs it will be interesting to see how many clubs will record profits and those that do how will they compare to previous years results.

To kick this off South Adelaide FC declared a 2012 net profit of $121k down from $179k in 2011 in its Annual Report released today. That's an excellent result but the club has forecast tougher times ahead over the next 2-3 years.

$132000 in legal fees and still posting a profit is I think a great result. I think the night games at Glenelg and the subsequent after match facilities will generate considerable turnover for the club.

Carbon Tax on lighting is going to eat into the profits of night games - It is going to be a severe impact on local amatuer league clubs with older lights tht chew through electricity.

Didn't realise there was a carbon tax on lighting? I suspect you mean the large increases in power prices because the energy regulator is piss weak and lets the market participants gouge customers.

Anyway, yes, power prices are continually rising ...
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

If you can understand the complicated structure that makes up the Norwood Football Club accounts then apparently the Redlegs made a $50,000 profit APPARENTLY !

Well according to a topic on the Reglegs Forum NFC had a $556,000 loss?

All financial reports are complicated to follow and often it is confusing unless in the know as to why a result is a loss rather than a profit but you will find many clubs posting losses deliberately for a variety of reasons.

A consolidated profit between the 3 trading entities of around $50,000.
Studying for my masters degree in accounting to understand them but those in the know seem to be happy.
Decent profit and contribution from the pokies venue.

Every SANFL "football" club entity I know runs at a loss which is then offset by profits made by its social club

There are a lot of internal transactions between both entities for rent, depreciation etc

so the only way to truly look at a figure is to combine the net surplus / loss of each entity.

A combined loss of $556,363 to be exact...

I've spent a few minutes poring over their statement and most of the figures aren't really worth getting too excited about as they're about the same (more or less) as the 2011 figures but there is two things to note as they stick out like dogs balls:

* The Redlegs Club Inc. donated $500,000 to the Norwood Football Club Inc entity in 2012. Compared with $150,000 in 2011. How ugly would N.F.C. Inc.'s loss had been if the Redlegs Club Inc. only donated their 2011 figure of $150,000?

* N.F.C. Inc had an added expense of "impairment of loan to 137 The Parade Pty Ltd" of $647,958. Anyone want to elaborate what that is? This is the reason why the N.F.C. Inc.'s loss is so bad.

On the plus side, N.F.C. Inc had an increase of approx $112,000 in sponsorship and donations in 2012 compared with 2011.

Dogs lose $110k

With pokie revenue stable at $4.3m I find it amazing they cant churn a profit from Grand Central.

Well North will post a small loss for 2012 and we have double the pokie revenue that Centrals have. There are some legit reasons for clubs posting losses including deliberate write downs / losses etc and North have some genuine reasons for the loss which will be explained when the financials get released.

If I'm reading it right.

We had Pokie turnover of $1.9m and made a profit.
Centrals had Pokie turnover of $4.3 m and made a loss.
North have a Pokie turnover of about $8m and will report a loss.

How can this be so?

Like many a business does, for taxation purposes, monies are assigned/used in a manner to build wealth but keep "actual profit" to a minimum.

$1 lease and council maintaining your ground would help a touch I'd say.
Some clubs would be paying more off loans than others and some would be threatened with losing club status so would be trying to write everything off possible. Some would be spending more on renos, etc. Some would spend a lot on public relations/juniors within their zone, some would spend next to nothing.
Bazillions of reasons.
